Excerpt from The Church of England Before the Reformation Second, Because Of the treatment Of English Church history which has Obtained currency during the past twenty or thirty years. It can also be safely asserted that a very large number of educated Churchmen have been led to accept the fallacy that the Church Of England before the Reformation was quite distinct from Rome in doctrine and practice, and that we were practically in the same position before the Reformation as we are now. It is, Of course, a difficult matter to over throw a popular idol; but I have no hesitation in saying that a closer investigation of the subject compels one to conclude that much Of the current interpretation of Church history before the Reforma tion is a fond thing vainly invented. The continuity theory is a figment. It can only be maintained by an ignoring Of the facts Of history, and by the special pleading Of an advocate who is determined to carry out his theory. Mr. Tomlinson, in his Legal History Of Canon Stubbs, shows to what lengths a passion for historical continuity may carry even such an able historian as the present Bishop Of Oxford. Excerpt from A History of the Church of England: Pre-Reformation Period It is to be presumed that a reason may be assigned for every book which is written. It may not always be evident to the reader, but the author must be conscious of some cause which moved him to write. In the present instance the moving cause was the lack of any work which seemed to the writer to trace the long story of the Church of England with sufficient brevity and sufficient fulness. Dry epitomes there are in abundance. Scholarly researches into the most remote past come forth year by year. The history of portions of the long centuries, or personal narrative, has been often written with appreciative genius. But there seemed more than room for a connected narrative which might be useful to one who is commencing acquaintance with English Church history, and which might also possess sufficient interest for the general reader. The Church of England is at once old and new. It has been reformed, but its heritage has come down to it through more than a millennium. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 7 The publication of the History of the Reformation seems to have been first suggested to its author by the appearance of the new French translation of Sanders' book de origine ac progressu Schismatis Anglicani. This work had been printed at Cologne in 1585, and had passed through several editions, and been translated into French in 1587. Upon the publication of the new translation by Maucroix at Paris in 1676, the author was diverted from the proposal made to him by Sir William Jones to undertake the history of England, and induced to write this History in answer to Sanders' work, which, he says, was at that time much cried up in France. At the time when he commenced his work he had, as he remarks in his Reflections on Atterbury, p. 25, had no sort of practice in our records, but took no small pains and charge for three years together in searching for materials, and submitted himself to the direction and advice of Bishop Stillingfleet, Sir John Marsham, and Mr. Petyt. He was at first unable to procure admittance into Sir John Cotton's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 3 This Work, which is designed to finish the History of our Reformation, seems reserved to be laid at your Majesty's feet; who, we trust, is designed by God to complete the Reformation itself. To rectify what may be yet amiss, and to supply what is defective among us; to oblige us to live and to labour more suitably to our profession; to unite us more firmly among ourselves; to bury, and for ever to extinguish, the fears of our relapsing again into popery; and to establish a confidence and correspondence with the protestant and reformed churches abroad. The eminent moderation of the most serene house from which your Majesty is descended, gives us auspicious hopes, that as God has now raised your Majesty, with signal characters of an amazing Providence, to be the head and the chief strength of the Reformation; so your Majesty will, by a wise and noble conduct, form all these churches into one body; so that, though they cannot agree to the same opinions and rituals with us in all points, yet they may join in one happy confederacy, for the support of the whole, and of every particular branch of that sacred union.
