The Church of Ireland has received a considerable amount of attention recently from nineteenth-century historians but few have looked at it from the perspective of the local community, as has been the case with recent work by historians in Britain. This study of the church in Victorian Dublin begins with a survey of the development of the parishes and the building of churches. It examines the devotional life and pastoral concerns of the laity and the clergy and their changing roles. An analysis of churchgoing trends is included and comparison is made with trends in England and Scotland. The study includes developments in church architecture, the layout of church buildings and the content of church services. This is set in the context of the demographic changes and the overall decline in the church's population in Dublin. While the study addresses the religious rivalry which existed between Catholics and Protestants, it also includes consideration of the laity's role in the management of the day-to-day life of the local church community. The social and educational backgrounds of the clergy are discussed and an account is given of their training and the changing process by which they were appointed to parishes. The study suggests that trends in the Church of Ireland in Dublin at the time were not dissimilar to the Church of England and both churches experienced a religious boom in the period. However, disestablishment in 1870 and the church's minority status gave the Church of Ireland a distinctive social and religious flavour.

Dublin has many histories: for a thousand years a modest urban settlement on the quiet waters of the Irish Sea, for the last four hundred it has experienced great - and often astonishing - change. Once a fulcrum of English power in Ireland, it was also the location for the 1916 insurrection that began the rapid imperial retreat. That moment provided Joyce with the setting for the greatest modernist novel of the age, Ulysses, capping a cultural heritage which became an economic resource for the brash 'Tiger Town' of the 1990s. David Dickson's magisterial survey of the city's history brings Dublin to life from its medieval incarnation through the glamorous eighteenth century, when it reigned as the 'Naples of the North', through to the millennium. He reassesses 120 years of Anglo-Irish Union, in which Dublin - while economic capital of Ireland - remained, as it does today, a place in which rival creeds and politics struggled for supremacy. Dublin reveals the rich and intriguing story behind the making of a capital city.

Recent studies of the experiences of Irish migrants in Victorian Britain have emphasized the significance of the themes of change, continuity, resistance and accommodation in the creation of a rich and diverse migrant culture within which a variety of Irish identities co-existed and sometimes competed. In contributing to this burgeoning historiography, this book explores and analyses the complexities surrounding the self-identity of the Irish in Victorian Britain, which differed not only from place to place and from one generation to another but which were also variously shaped by issues of class and gender, and politics and religion. Moreover, and given the tendency for Irish ethnicity to mutate, through a comparative study of the Irish in Britain and the United States, the book suggests that in order to preserve their Irishness, the Irish often had to change it. Written by some of the foremost scholars in the field, these original essays not only shed new light on the history of the Irish in Britain but are also integral to the broader study of the Irish Diaspora and of immigrants and minorities in multicultural societies. This book was previously published as a special issue of Immigrants and Minorities.
