Over the past decade scholars have begun to examine in greater depth the pivotal role that foreigners played in the development of the Early Modern European city. In Rome foreign communities had a major part in shaping the urban landscape, more permanently with national churches, hospitals, chapels, neighborhoods, and temporarily through public processions and festivals. This dissertation examines the Spanish National Church, San Giacomo and San Ildefonso degli Spagnoli, founded in 1450 to provide a religious and charitable center for the growing Castilian expatriate community and their many co-nationals visiting on pilgrimage. When San Giacomo opened its doors it was a small, unpretentious space, with a hospital attached, facing the medieval street of Via del Sapienza. Over the next hundred years, the church expanded significantly and a second, statelier entrance was added opening onto the Piazza Navona, which had become a locus for grand secular and religious celebrations in the city. Significantly, these changes at San Giacomo coincide with the growing prestige and influence of the Spanish community on the European stage. This dissertation will provide the first art historical monograph produced since the 1950s of San Giacomo from its origins through the 1560s. In contrast to previous studies, I will set my discussion of the architecture and art within the historical context. In this way I will demonstrate that the Spanish used the most common languages available in Roman culture--the visual and spatial--as a rhetorical device to set forth their political aspirations and religious values and promote their nation in Rome. I also connect this project to other Spanish commissions in Rome, which has not previously been undertaken, and illustrate that they shared characteristics by which the nascent Spanish nation sought to define itself. Reexamining the church within the historical background allows for a thorough iconographic reading, not previously attempted, of the most well known chapel in the church, that of Cardinal Jaime Serra, designed by Antonio da Sangallo and decorated by Pellegrino da Modena and Jacopo Sansovino. I provide an explanation for the patron's choice of content, taking into consideration both Spanish ambitions and the pressing political concerns of both the Pope and the curia. My analysis will also take into account recently discovered archival evidence that the Sangallo architectural ornamentation was actually designed and constructed two decades after the chapel was decorated. This is the first lengthy discussion of the architecture based on the new date. Moreover I use it as a base on which to reconsider the patron's motivations for refurbishing the architecture of the chapel. Finally, this study proposes that national churches in Rome, as a group, should be recognized for the vital role they played in society. Within their community they provided a safe haven and a space from which foreign nationals could deal with the rest of society. Simultaneously, they were a primary means for the public recognition of a nation within this cosmopolitan city. Consequently, tracking the art and architecture of these churches, and the changes made over time, offers a unique opportunity to gauge the way an Early Modern European country saw itself, and the way they wanted to be perceived.

The book delves into the varied ways in which the protagonists, representing a cross-section of Portuguese society, went about grappling with the complexities of a New Christian identity, and tracks them through their interactions with Roman society and its institutions. Some chose to flaunt Jewish origins. They espoused a sense of being part of a distinctive group, the Portuguese New Christian nação, that set them apart from other Portuguese. Others chose to blend as much as possible into the broader Iberian world represented at Rome, and avoided calling attention to their family past. All, however, had in their own way to work out the multiple shades of what was involved in being a Portuguese with Jewish roots needing to navigate the social and cultural pathways through Rome, the urban center of the Catholic Church. Important centres of charity, hospitality and representation, the national churches of Rome were also major hubs of musical production. This collective work is the fruit of several years of largely unpublished research on the musical life of these institutions, considered for the first time as a whole. What it primarily brings to light is the common model which emerged from the interactions between the national churches, as well as between these and other Roman churches, in musical matters - eloquent example of a unifying cultural paradigm. The repertories used by these churches, the ceremonies and celebrations they orchestrated in the teatro del mondo which Rome constituted at the time, their role in the placing of musicians within the city's professional networks are just some of the themes explored in this work. The cultural exchanges between the national churches and the "nations" that they represented in the pontifical city form another important area of investigation: whether musical or devotional, connecting places of worship and private palaces or extending from one side of the Alps to the other, these exchanges reveal the permeability that characterised many national traditions. At the heart of this richly illustrated study are two fundamental lines of inquiry: the fi rst concerns the processes of identity construction developed by communities installed in foreign lands, the second line of inquiry is cultural hybridity. On the night of March 18, 1655, two Spanish friars broke into a church to steal the bones of the founder of their religious institution, the Order of the Most Holy Trinity. This book investigates this little-known incident of relic theft and the lengthy legal case that followed, together with the larger questions that surround the remains of saints in seventeenth-century Catholic Europe. Drawing on a wealth of manuscript and print sources from the era, A. Katie Harris uses the case of St. John of Matha’s stolen remains to explore the roles played by saints’ relics, the anxieties invested in them, their cultural meanings, and the changing modes of thought with which early modern Catholics approached them. While in theory a relic’s authenticity and identity might be proved by supernatural evidence, in practice early modern Church authorities often reached for proofs grounded in the material, human world—preferences that were representative of the standardizing and streamlining of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century saint-making. Harris examines how Matha’s advocates deployed material and documentary proofs, locating them within a framework of Scholastic concepts of individuation, identity, change, and persistence, and applying moral certainty to accommodate the inherent uncertainty of human evidence and relic knowledge. Previous scholarship has interpreted Bishop Isidore of Seville (d. 636) retrospectively as the architect of the medieval Spanish church, as the father of Spanish identity, and as a key figure in the transmission of Classical and Patristic learning to the Middle Ages. Drawing on recent studies on identity formation in the early medieval period and an upsurge in interest in late antique Spain, this book examines the historical Isidore as a social actor managing a complex web of responsibilities and relationships. A comparative analysis of Isidore's historical works demonstrates that writing about the past was a method for reconciling Visigothic kings, nobles and Spanish bishops in a period of transformation. This results in a fresh portrait of Isidore as motivated, both politically and pastorally, to balance competing interests and ensure the spiritual and material security of the people of Spain.
