In the fourteenth century, the Roman Catholic Church reigned supreme in England. The first break from the Church occurred in the early 1500s when King Henry VII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine. The King's break with the Roman Catholic Church created the Anglican Church (Church of England) which, though not entirely Protestant, nonetheless allowed a revival of Protestantism. Many of these Protestants were called Puritans "because of their wish to purify and reform the State Church." Religious persecution continued through the 1600s, however, for any group that varied too far from the teachings of the Church of England. The Pilgrims evolved from the Puritans. The author endeavors "to make plain something of the exalted character of the men and women whom preeminently the world has agreed to call the Pilgrims...." who "maintained steadily their lofty intellectual, moral, and religious standards and soon exerted an enlightening influence upon the world out of all proportion to the smallness of their colony." This informative and readable history includes biographical sketches of Robert Browne, William Brewster, William Bradford, and John Robinson, as well as many notes on lesser known but nonetheless important early Pilgrims. The Pilgrim towns of Scrooby and Austerfield in England are described in detail, as is the now-famous Plymouth Colony of 1620 in Massachusetts. The author describes the colony in detail, devoting chapters to its early life, commercial history, and first year of existence. This book was originally printed as a series of weekly articles in 1893 for members of the Scrooby Clubs, a nationwide collection of individuals associated with the Congregational Church. Excerpt from The Church of the Pilgrims, Brooklyn, New York: Its Character and Work, With the Changes Around It, During Forty Years of Pastoral Service A certain reserve has therefore characterized it, such as used to be more common in churches than it has been of late. There has never been felt here the passion for publicity which finds the church-life most exhilarating when public mention of it is frequent; to which the church appears walking victoriously on high places when the newspapers are occupied with what is said or done within it. We have preferred to live in the privacy secured to us, and to do our work, in our special Sphere, without proclamation. It has never been our wont to advertise our services, except on the rarest public occasions; and the many strangers whom we have gladly welcomed to them have come from an impulse in themselves, not as attracted by notices in the papers. I imply in this no adverse criticism on a different plan. I see, indeed, that that. May have advantages. I speak only of what our own custom has been, as naturally suggested by the particular composition of the church. The families thus associated have by no means been wholly from New England, or descendants of the Puritan stock; nor have they been such, only, as had previously been accustomed to the Congregational order or worship. English, Scotch, and German families have been as pleasantly at home in the church as have been those of American origin so have families of the Holland lineage, or those springing from a Huguenot ancestry; families from the North of Ireland, or from Canada; from the West, the Middle States, or the South, as well as those from New England. In this day when Christians and churches are widely dispersed throughout the world, the ques- tion ‘Who is the church?’ could easily be dismissed as irrelevant. In this publication, Bishop David Zac Niringiye pleads that as Jesus warned, we should not be in haste to conclude that any community with religious titles or forms and who speaks the right language of ‘Lord, Lord . . . ’ is authentic church. Taking his cue from Hebrews 11 and 12 the author addresses the motif of ‘the people of God’, looking first at the ancient people of Israel, beginning with Moses, then the new Israel and the covenant in Christ, born through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and finally the life of the new community, the church, during the apostolic era. Through this biblical journey it is made clear that as the pilgrim people of God and the new community in Christ we must be marked by faith, love and hope, looking forward to the full consummation of the kingdom of God – justice, peace and joy, fully realized when ‘the new heaven and the new earth where righteousness dwells’ (2 Peter 3:13) is inaugurated.

"The more I listen to people, the more I lecture, the more I realize how wide is the gap between the people's understanding of the Church and the Church's historical realities." [Introduction] The author seeks to close this gap by critically exploring such areas as: the rich variety of ministries in the early Church; the Crusades; the piety of the Middle Ages; the challenge of the Reformation; the role of the pope; the rise, fall and recent reinstatement of the diaconate; the changing role of women in the Church; and the origins of various liturgies and popular devotions.

A unique commentary on the Roman Catholic Church near the end of the second millennium which looks backward and forward as the author analyzes the status of the Catholic Church in today's world. What the author sees is a Church that, having lost its historic place of spiritual and temporal power, has receded into a corner of modern pluralistic society. Deploring the erosion of the Roman Catholic Church's traditional authority, he argues that many of its leaders have accommodated the Church to contemporary secular culture in the wake of Vatican II reforms. Some have been duped by leftist philosophies of liberation; others have succumbed to pluralistic pressures, contributing to the marginalization and decline of the Church in particular and religion in general.
