"In order to explain this apparent contradiction, Bramadat conducts interviews with members of the McMaster IVCF and explores their various survival strategies. He shows that the secular setting is contested turf, a context within which believers engage in a complex process of negotiation in an attempt to find a fertile place for themselves and the small number of true Christians in a rapidly changing world."--BOOK JACKET.

This is the SCM Core Text: "Modern Church History" provides an introduction to global Christianity from 1700 to the mid 20th C. The book aims to help students understand the processes, movements and individuals who have contributed to making the contemporary Christian landscape the shape it is in the 21st century. Theologically it takes a wide and inclusive approach to provide a balanced survey of Christianity in all its forms - Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox. Geographically it focuses on the Christian church in the UK, continental Europe and North America, and examines in each location the social movements, campaigns and campaigners, scientific and political challenges that have shaped the Christian Church throughout the period.Beginning with the reaction to Lutherism, it charts the rise of Pietism in Europe throughout the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the influence of John Wesley and the Methodists, in the UK and the 'Great Awakening' in North America. The early chapters summarize the developments within the Christian Church in the UK, with detailed coverage of the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish situations, throughout the 19th Century. This is followed by a summary of the various schools of thought to have developed through the 20th C, including the church's reaction to the 2 world wars in Europe, fundamentalism in the USA. The book also provides specific coverage of the religious situation in North America throughout the modern period covering the development of separate black churches, the 'New Evangelicalism'. It is suitable for level two as well as introductory courses in modern church history or courses concerned with religion, culture and society in the 18th - 20th centuries

The Catholic Apostolic Church combined liturgical worship, charismatic experience, ecumenical vision, and eschatological expectation. Philip Schaff commented that the claims made for its apostles, if true, commanded every Christian's attention. Historians and liturgists alike have been fascinated by the Church, but deterred from researching it because of the notorious difficulty of access to material. This account of the church's growth and decline draws on archival sources from several countries, many not hitherto used for research, and publications in German as well as English. Previous accounts in English have focused on the Church in the English-speaking world, but this book breaks fresh ground by covering the Church's development in every country where it was active. Surveying Catholic Apostolic history, polity, and ministry, it seeks to tell the story rather than using the Church as a test-case for a preconceived hypothesis. In so doing, it opens up a range of lines of inquiry for future researchers.

Excerpt from 1896 and the Five Redemption Years: A Blade O' Grass Christian men, even in these more enlightened times, have been wont to hide behind the letter of the Scripture, and to declare that they are not at fault God, in his infin ite wisdom, has not seen fit to save the world; or sinners, in the hardness of their hearts, have refused to be converted. God has not even inspired his disciples to work more dili gently for the world's salvation. As the inspiration for every good work must come from God, Christian people are not to blame for the unsatisfactory moral condition of man kind. Inferentially and theologically it is God who is at fault. The Christian church goes scot free of blame! The Word of God declares that it has pleased God, through the foolishness of preaching, to save those who believe. If we ignore the less positive teaching of the Scriptures upon this point, and make this text our Bible as far as this one point is concerned, it would seem that preaching is the only duly accredited means of saving the world. At least in apparent fidelity to this idea, the church has magnified the office of the preacher of the gospel until he stands almost alone as the human instrument of salva tion in the modern church. He alone is considered the evangelist of the gospel of Christ, and in every village and hamlet in Civilized countries there has been a pulpit erected for him, and our missionaries also occupy every point of vantage in heathen lands. Surely it would seem that the divine commission had been fulfilled. We have preached the gospel continually and are still preaching, preaching. Preaching; and yet the world is not saved. People will not even come into our churches and sit in the cushioned pews we have provided for them. We have certainly fulfilled the demands of the law, since the gospel is preached every where. What more is needed? Why is the world not saved? The Bible specifically makes faith the basis of salvation, and also teaches that the prayer of faith is duly answered. The church, reading the letter of the law in this respect, also, has established prayer-meeting rooms in connection with every place of worship, and its membership is dili gently exhorted to have greater faith in God, and in his power to save mankind from its sins. We have prayed times without number that the world might be saved, and that the church might receive a greater baptism of the Holy Spirit, and thus be better able to lead men to the Savior, but our prayers have not been answered. We have prayed diligently, and we have also paid for the preaching of the gospel in our churches, but still the world is not saved. What more can be lacking? The springing-up of lay communities in the Roman Catholic Church can be seen as one of the clearest manifestions of the work of The Holy Spirit in our time. As Church authorities in Rome seem preoccupied with raising barracades against the modern world, at grass roots level, numerous movements have shown that renewal must also take root among the people of God, among the laity. Charismatic Renewal in the Roman Catholic Church is a world wide phenomenon which has bought new momentum and inspiration to parishes. Chiara Lubich who founded the Focolari movement has an influence far outside her own community and indeed far outside the Roman Catholic Church. Jean Vanier's communities called L'Arche have bought an entirely new meaning to the Church's mission to the poor, disadvantaged and dispossessed. They have also instigated a new understanding of human dignity. The Community of Sant 'Egidio in Rome, Communio e Liberazione and The NeoCatechumenate are all seen as beacons of light in a world of turbulence and uncertainty. For those who need hope in the modern world, for those who need to believe that the Gospel's call to renew the face of the earth is demanding and full of rich possibilities, this book has a message of deep encouragement. All these movements are working with the blessing of The Church but are also profoundly ecumenical. People way outside the Catholic Church have been touched and inspired by these movements and will be inspired by this book.

""There have been a number of books on themes relating to the Catholic Apostolic Church, but never before a comprehensive history like this. Grass has mastered a wide range of sources relating to the whole period of the body's existence and to the many countries where it once flourished. He has added new themes but also extended our knowledge on aspects of the body's history and doctrine discussed in past publications. In short: nobody should get away with the old master narratives after the publication of this book."" --Manfred Henke, New Apostolic Church historian ""Tim Grass's excellent pioneering historical account of the Catholic Apostolic Church--a new movement in nineteenth-century Christianity which believed God had instituted a new body of apostles to seek to unite Christendom and to prepare Christians for the imminent return of Christ in judgment--describes the growth and decline of the church in Germany as well as the English-speaking world and its influence on twentieth-century theological and liturgical developments."" --W. M. Jacob, Visiting Research Fellow, King's College, London ""Tim Grass has given us a superb history of the Catholic Apostolic Church. A master of his subject, he writes with clarity, understanding, and empathy, bringing his readers inside the beliefs and practices of this extraordinary movement for the renewal of Christendom. His story is a moving one of vision, promise, renewal, and luminous worship, followed by disappointment, silence, and altars covered--all set against an enduring Catholic Apostolic faith in a divine plan."" --Stewart J. Brown, Professor of Ecclesiastical History, University of Edinburgh Tim Grass is a Senior Research Fellow at Spurgeon's College, London, Assistant Editor for the Ecclesiastical History Society, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He also serves as Facilitator of the Lausanne-Orthodox Initiative. Tim has authored Gathering to His Name: The Story of Open Brethren in Britain and Ireland (2006), SCM Core Text: Modern Church History (2008), The Lord's Watchman: A Life of Edward Irving (2011), and F. F. Bruce: A Life (2011).

Practical and Gospel-centered thoughts on how to have a fruitful ministry by one of America's leading and most beloved pastor. Many church leaders are struggling to adapt to a culture that values individuality above loyalty to a group or institution. There have been so many "church growth" and "effective ministry" books in the past few decades that it's hard to know where to start or which ones will provide useful and honest insight. Based on over twenty years of ministry in New York City, Timothy Keller takes a unique approach that measures a ministry's success neither by numbers nor purely by the faithfulness of its leaders, but on the biblical grounds of fruitfulness. Center Church outlines a balanced theological vision for ministry organized around three core commitments: Gospel-centered: The gospel of grace in Jesus Christ changes everything, from our hearts to our community to the world. It completely reshapes the content, tone, and strategy of all that we do. City-centered: With a positive approach toward our culture, we learn to affirm that cities are wonderful, strategic, and under-served places for gospel ministry. Movement-centered: Instead of building our own tribe, we seek the prosperity and peace of our community as we are led by the Holy Spirit. "Between a pastor's doctrinal beliefs and ministry practices should be a well-conceived vision for how to bring the gospel to bear on the particular cultural setting and historical moment. This is something more practical than just doctrine but much more theological than "how-to steps" for carrying out a ministry. Once this vision is in place, it leads church leaders to make good decisions on how to worship, disciple, evangelize, serve, and engage culture in their field of ministry—whether in a city, suburb, or small town." — Tim Keller, Core Church
