Abstract: This study was designed to determine if participants who drew circus characters with a level of risk, would have a lower Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) level. The researcher hypothesized that a significant relationship would support the validity of the hypothesis and the assessment. Participants from a mental health day treatment program (N=30) were asked to complete a survey on the circus and a drawing, the Circus Phenomenon. The participants were gathered over a three month period of time. Participants met with the researcher individually for about 20 min. GAF scores were found by the researcher in individual client files. No significant difference (p=.398) was found between the scores on the Circus Phenomenon and the GAF scores. Possible reasons for the difference included a narrow range of GAF scores, or inaccurate GAF scores, and the interaction of participants with each other.

Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine if there was a relationship between at-risk factors and the Circus Phenomenon art therapy assessment. Adolescents (N = 26) from the Bridging the Gap after-school program were the participants. The participants were given a Circus Survey prior to taking the actual Circus Phenomenon drawing assessment. They were asked to title their drawing and write down three sentences that told something about what they had drawn. Graduate and undergraduate art therapy students (N = 30) completed the Circus Survey for College Students, which ranked circus performers in order from greatest to least amount of risk required for each circus act. The ranking of each character was used to assign a number to the characters drawn in the assessment. These numbers were correlated with the at-risk number assigned to each youth. The at-risk number was determined by the results each youth had on the At-Risk Survey and the At-Risk Casefile Information combined. Using the Spearman rho correlational coefficient, no significant relationship was found. Possible reasons for this outcome include a limited sample, the nature of the population, and the simplicity of the measurements.

Circus And The Avant Gardes written by Anna-Sophie Jürgens and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-15 with Performing Arts categories.

This book examines how circus and circus imaginary have shaped the historical avant-gardes at the beginning of the 20th century and the cultures they help constitute, to what extent this is a mutual shaping, and why this is still relevant today. This book aims to produce a better sense of the artistic work and cultural achievements that have emerged from the interplay of circus and avant-garde artists and projects, and to clarify both their transhistorical and trans-medial presence, and their scope for interdisciplinary expansion. Across 14 chapters written by leading scholars – from fields as varied as circus, theatre and performance studies, art, media studies, film and cultural history – some of which are written together with performers and circus practitioners, the book examines to what extent circus and avant-garde connections contribute to a better understanding of early 20th century artistic movements and their enduring legacy, of the history of popular entertainment, and the cultural relevance of circus arts. Circus and the Avant-Gardes elucidates how the realm of the circus as a model, or rather a blueprint for modernist experiment, innovation and (re)negotiation of bodies, has become fully integrated in our ways of perceiving avant-gardes today. The book does not only map the significance of circus/avant-garde phenomena for the past, but, through an exploration of their contemporary actualisations (in different media), also carves out their achievements, relevance, and impact, both cultural and aesthetic, on the present time.

Since the foundation of the 'modern' circus in the eighteenth century, the circus has been presented in defined spaces. Initially, performances were given in the open air and, over a period of time, these spaces first became enclosed and then later roofed. Temporary wooden structures often became semi-permanent until, in the nineteenth century, many permanent stone-built buildings were erected solely for the purpose of presenting circus. This phenomenon spread from the UK across Europe and beyond, creating a style of circus architecture that has never been repeated. The purpose of this book is to examine what caused these buildings to be constructed and their design and architecture. Examples of key structures will be explored in detail, some of them still surviving today and still being used for circus performances. The book will also look at the developments of contemporary circus architecture and raise questions as to the future of the circus building.

Semiotics At The Circus written by Paul Bouissac and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-17 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Semiotics is long on theoretical, often obscure discourses, but short on applications that demonstrate with clarity the applicability of its methods. This book confronts a challenging object, the circus, and endeavors to describe its performances in ways that explain how circus acts produce meaning and cause a deep emotional involvement for their audiences. The approach is not top-down, such as would be a method that would dogmatically apply a particular theory to fully explain the phenomena in terms of this theory alone. Epistemologically, this book is an example of the bottom-up strategy, which consists of considering first the objects and heuristically calling upon methodological resources in a broad theoretical array to come to grips with the problems that are encountered. Any circus act is a complex event that has cognitive and emotional dimensions. It is also a part of a history and an institution, and cannot be abstracted from its cultural and sociological contexts. Thus the range of relevant theoretical and methodological approaches must include structural semiotics, biosemiotics, pragmatics, socio-semiotics, cultural anthropology, the cognitive sciences, the psychology and sociology of emotions, to name only the most important. But the ultimate focus of this book is to enable the readers to better understand the meaning of circus performances and to appreciate the skills and creativity of this traditional popular art, which constantly renews itself from generation to generation.

The Ordinary Acrobat written by Duncan Wall and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-26 with Performing Arts categories.

The extraordinary story of a young man’s plunge into the unique and wonderful world of the circus—taking readers deep into circus history and its renaissance as a contemporary art form, and behind the (tented) walls of France’s most prestigious circus school. When Duncan Wall visited his first nouveau cirque as a college student in Paris, everything about it—the monochromatic costumes, the acrobat singing Simon and Garfunkel, the juggler reciting Proust—was captivating. Soon he was waiting outside stage doors, eagerly chatting with the stars, and attending circuses two or three nights a week. So great was his enthusiasm that a year later he applied on a whim to the training program at the École Nationale des Arts du Cirque—and was, to his surprise, accepted. Sometimes scary and often funny, The Ordinary Acrobat follows the (occasionally literal) collision of one American novice and a host of gifted international students in a rigorous regimen of tumbling, trapeze, juggling, and clowning. Along the way, Wall introduces readers to all the ambition, beauty, and thrills of the circus’s long history: from hardscrabble beginnings to Gilded Age treasures, and from twentieth-century artistic and economic struggles to its brilliant reemergence in the form of contemporary circus (most prominently through Cirque du Soleil). Readers meet figures past—the father of the circus, Philip Astley; the larger-than-life P. T. Barnum—and present, as Wall seeks lessons from innovative masters including juggler Jérôme Thomas and clown André Riot-Sarcey. As Wall learns, not everyone is destined to run away with the circus—but the institution fascinates just the same. Brimming with surprises, outsized personalities, and plenty of charm, The Ordinary Acrobat delivers all the excitement and pleasure of the circus ring itself.
