New York City College of Technology, known today as City Tech, traces its earliest roots to the trade school movement, which was supported by both organized labor and industry. Opening in February 1947 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, the school served the needs of returning GIs and others in need of employment training. City Tech trained United States Air Force personnel in its employment-oriented programs, including the first college-based program in the country in restorative dentistry. City Tech became the first public community college in New York, and in 1981, it became the senior college of technology of The City University of New York. Today City Tech is the largest public college of technology in the Northeast and the most diverse. New York City College of Technology highlights the history of this vibrant institution that has continually served the needs of both its students and its city.

Free City! The Fight for San Francisco’s City College and Education for All tells the story of the five years of organizing that turned a seemingly hopeless defensive fight into a victory for the most progressive free college measure in the US. In 2012, the accreditor sanctioned City College of San Francisco, one of the biggest and best community colleges in the country, and a year later proposed terminating its accreditation, leading to a state takeover. Free City! follows the multipronged strategies of the campaign and the diverse characters that carried them out. Teachers, students, labor unions, community groups, public officials, and concerned individuals saved a treasured public institution as San Francisco’s working-class communities of color battled the gentrification that was forcing them out of the city. And they pushed back against the national “reform” agenda of corporate workforce training that drives students towards debt and sidelines lifelong learning and community service programs. Combining analysis with narrative, Free City! offers a case study in the power of positive vision and solution-oriented organizing and a reflection on what education can and should be.

Since it was first published in 1982 The American Community College has become the primary resource that faculty, administrators, trustees, and researchers look to for a comprehensive analysis of the most recent findings and up-to-date information on the American community college. Throughout this important book, Arthur M. Cohen and Florence B. Brawer describe how community colleges fit into the American educational system, the services they provide, and the effects they have on the community. This completely revised and updated edition contains information about recent changes in the community college landscape, including consolidation of faculty power, mandatory testing and placement of students, the greater prominence of developmental education, and the attention given to state-level directives regarding institutional functioning and funding. The authors also present the current information on a number of other topics, including student flow, instruction, student services, and curricular functions. In addition, The American Community College includes updated tables and graphs that reflect the most current data and incorporate new examples of the services that colleges provide. The American Community College is a comprehensive book that will be useful to anyone concerned with the role and purpose of two-year institutions in American higher education. The descriptions and analyses of each of the institution's functions can be used by administrators who want to learn about practices that have proven successful at other colleges, curriculum planners involved in program revisions, faculty members seeking ideas for modifying their courses, trustees and officials concerned with college policies regarding curriculum and student services, and graduate students preparing for careers in these institutions.
