As step-daughter of William Godwin, as companion to Shelley and Mary on their elopement, as Shelley's "Constantia," as mother of Byron's Allegra, as a regular member of the Shelley circle (close to Peacock, Leigh Hunt, Hogg, Lady Mount Cashell, and Trelawny), as governess in Russia during the Decembrist Revolution, as confidante of Mary Shelley and Jane Williams in their middle years, and, in her old age, as the inspiration of Henry James's The Aspern Papers, she both lived and recorded the Romantic Revolution. Brought up in the same household as Mary Shelley, dedicated to the principles of Mary Wollstonecraft, Claire was a more enthusiastic feminist than Mary, and her letters on this theme are always arresting, often hilarious. She wrote on the perils of marriage, on the advantages of illegitimacy, and on the forces that press a woman of no fortune into dependency. She resisted these forces, maintaining her independence in the only career open to her--governess and companion--while dreaming of a "society of free women." This edition presents the texts of all known surviving letters by Claire Clairmont along with those of her brother Charles Clairmont and her stepsister Fanny Imlay Godwin--229 letters in all, of which 183 are published here for the first time complete. ClaireClairmont's letters, numbering 190, date from 1815, when she was seventeen, to two months before her death in 1879. Charles Clairmont's 32 letters begin with schoolboy notes to Godwin in 1808, when he was thirteen, and conclude in 1849, two months before his death. Fanny Godwin's seven are all from 1816, the year of her suicide at the age of twenty-two. The volumes also include a chronological chart, genealogical tables, appendices, and twenty-eight illustrations. Almost 200 years ago the Northeast endured a dramatic, devastating series of cold spells, destroying crops, forcing thousand to migrate west, and causing many to wonder if their assumptions about a world governed by a beneficial Providence were valid. The so-called "year without a summer" also exposed weaknesses in political and theological authorities, spurring a trend toward scientific inquiry and greater democracy. This book is written with the parallels between 1816 and our current "climate change" in mind: it introduces informed non-specialists to the myriad of social, psychological, political, demographic, and economic consequences which can be brought about by abrupt change. A major meteorological event profoundly affected our nation’s development in 1816. This book shows how this weather phenomenon acted as an accelerator of trends which were just emerging in the early 19th-century - toward greater democracy and the spread of information; settlement of the Western frontier; use of the scientific method to investigate and understand natural phenomena; questioning of long-held religious beliefs as a result of increased knowledge; and industrialization as the means to expand the scope and wealth of the United States. Like all my books, America’s First Climate Crisis is written in an accessible, engaging style, using anecdotes and thumbnail sketches to evoke the mood and important personalities of the day. While thoroughly researched, the book avoids the pitfall of academic writing by appealing to the curiosity of intelligent readers who may be put off by uninspired or technical language. The book is organized around various consequences of the disastrous harvests of 1816: after outlining the nature and scope of this calamity, I describe how it brought about a massive exodus to the Ohio Valley and shift in political and economic might to that region; how it undermined the once-unquestioned authority of New England’s Federalist establishment; how it gave greater credence to scientific explanations for weather events and disasters; how it compelled New England merchants to abandon their opposition to manufacturing; and how it helped create a modern awareness of humanity’s place in the universe.

Eternity in British Romantic Poetry explores the representation of the relationship between eternity and the mortal world in the poetry of the period. It offers an original approach to Romanticism that demonstrates, against the grain, the dominant intellectual preoccupation of the era: the relationship between the mortal and the eternal. The project's scope is two-fold: firstly, it analyses the prevalence and range of images of eternity (from apocalypse and afterlife to transcendence) in Romantic poetry; secondly, it opens up a new and more nuanced focus on how Romantic poets imagined and interacted with the idea of eternity. Every poet featured in the book seeks and finds their uniqueness in their apprehension of eternity. From Blake’s assertion of the Eternal Now to Keats’s defiance of eternity, Wordsworth’s ‘two consciousnesses’ versus Coleridge’s capacious poetry, Byron’s swithering between versions of eternity compared to Shelleyan yearning, and Hemans’s superlative account of everlasting female suffering, each poet finds new versions of eternity to explore or reject. Socially, they range from elite women to women of middle-class and lower middle-class origin. In terms of theory, the book brings fresh insights into issues that have been long discussed in the field of women’s history and are also debated today. However, despite its focus on women, the book is conceptually not so much focused on gender as it is on profession, business, career, qualifications, skills, and work. By applying such concepts to analyzing women’s endeavours, the book aims at challenging the conventional ideas about them.
