Allotments are enjoying a renewed popularity because people want to know exactly what theyre eating, save money, eat seasonally and save on carbon footprints. As well as men, more and more women are taking up the challenge to create their own sustainable food source with allotments, as well as experiencing the enjoyment of seeing things grow, not just fruit and vegetables, but also flowers. As well as potatoes and sunflowers, exotic plants such as ginger and pak choi are being grown and people are running businesses from their allotment produce, tapping into the locally-sourced, seasonal food market. Gordon Thorburn shows how to make the best from your allotment or even a veg patch with tips on natural bug deterrents, companion planting (save your cabbages by planting marigolds amongst them) and a handy seasonal planner, as well as must-try recipes.

Excerpt from The Cultivation of Allotments Although it is not always possible to select an ideal spot for an allotment garden, yet it is worth while to know what to consider if a selection is possible. The garden should not be on very high ground, since on high, exposed positions drying winds and gales may do much damage. Nor should it be too lowlying, since many low lying gardens are subject to fogs and late Spring frosts, and may even be waterlogged. It is also desirable that the garden should have a gentle slope to the south, south-east, or south-west, so that the crops get a maximum amount of sunlight and air. Plants grown under these conditions ripen earlier and resist insects and disease better than if these conditions are impossible. We are Often asked how large an allotment garden should be. NO general answer can be given. A man with a good deal of time on his hands might cultivate as much as forty poles (or quarter of an acre), but the usual sizes are half a chain (or 8 square poles), ten poles, and one chain (or 16 square poles). There is a decided advantage in having the allotment garden long and rather narrow, especially if it is possible to have it long from east to west and short from north to south. It is most desirable that there should be a further extension in those delightful home pursuits but not in the smallest degree less desirable is it that Vegetables should have all the attention that their commanding merits deserve. It is gratifying to know that their value is becoming more and more recognised. For a long time they were assigned a relatively low place in Horticultural exhibitions, whereas now they form a prominent feature at many, while lectures on Vegetables are largely attended by. Excerpt from Allotments and Small Holdings The chief object of this little Work - apart from its general advocacy of Allotments and Small Holdings - is to show how the enactments relating thereto may be put into operation. The technical matter, therefore - brought down to the latest date - will, it is hoped, be found useful not only to those who desire land and to land-owners, but to Parish, District, and County Councillors in whose hands the enforcement of the Allotments and Small Holdings Acts is so largely placed.
