Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Edward Irving, Vol. 2 of 5 Hese verses are to the narrative which follows, of pre cisely the same import as the date is to a letter or any official document, ascertaining the precise time, place, and cir cumstances, under which the wonderful events that follow began their course; and, therefore, instead of being slightly passed over as an uninteresting enumeration of names with which the mind refuses to be burdened, they should be used by'the expounder Of the record, for that very purpose for which they were set down by the writer, as affording a clue by which to ascertain the veracity of the narrator, and the certainty of the things narrated. Therefore, though it may not be so agreeable to many ears to discourse of historical fact and evidence, as of orthodoxy, doctrine, and religious experience, yet, seeing the thing must sometimes be done for the conviction of the gain sayer and the knowledge of all, I hesitate not to treat of that of which the evangelist has written of the circumstances of place and time; and the evidence thence to be derived of the character of the narrator and the things narrated. A On the other hand, I am willing to allow, that while con stancy, either in the laws of nature, or the ways of men, or the promises of God, begets expectation and desire and prayer in that direction to which they constantly tend, -it never fails to destroy expectation, and along with it desire and prayer, in the opposite direction. If justice be inflexible, it is vain to petition against it if a father be unbending from the rules of his household, his children soon learn to confine their wishes and prayers within the given bounds. And a friend who is known to be stanch, is not bored with undermining surmises; nor a counsellor that is always wise, with fallacious sophisms; nor a master that is firm, with vain suits for relaxation. While steadiness of purpose and character is the life of expectation and prayer within the bounds of its fixed procedure, it is the death of all without them. Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Edward Irving, Vol. 4 of 5 Idolatry, therefore, hath its origin in the honest faith and conviction of the mind that there is a form Of being more noble than itself, and the character of the idol dependeth upon the nature of that idea which the mind hath formed concerning the most perfect forms Of being. Amongst the Egyptians, who followed after the arts of peace and the cul ture of the earth, those were exalted into the rank of gods who had been the greatest inventors in agriculture and the arts, and under whose government the land had flourished most. Amongst the Greeks, who followed after the perfection and elegance of life, those were raised to the condition Of gods who had reclaimed the earth from the power Of wild beasts and savage men, and laid the rude foundations of the state. Among the northern nations, whose whole soul was bent on war, and who viewed it as a bondage to till the ground or labour in the arts Of peace, the gods were invested with the fearful attributes of power and strength, and their blessedness placed in the strife Of battle, the glory of revenge, and the red cup of victory. And it would be found universally, if we could trace the history of idolatry to its sources, that the gods which the blinded nations worship were at first the deifi cations Of men who excelled the rest Of their kind in physical and moral power, who afterwards became symbolical of what ever more enlarged and ennobled thoughts men afterwards attained unto in that class of the ideal region to which each of these personifications belonged.
