This book examines regional structural challenges on Colombia’s path to sustainable social cohesion and regionally inclusive growth. These challenges can be divided into three main groups: (i) those that focus on competitiveness and the supply side, (ii) those that arise from critical business cycle issues on the demand side, and (iii) those concerning environmental sustainability, employment and social inclusion. The contributions, written by experts on Latin American economics and regional science, apply quantitative simulations based on a unified general equilibrium framework and address a wide range of topics, including: Colombia’s competitive integration in global markets, human capital profiles, regional economic disparities and public and private mechanisms of interregional income transfer. The challenges entailed by such high-profile and long-term issues as productivity growth and climate change are also analyzed. In addition, the book positions Colombia’s experiences in an international comparative context. It argues that many other Latin American countries face similar challenges and provide evidence to substantiate this claim. By doing so, it offers valuable policy lessons for Latin American countries with similar difficulties.

The Terciarization Of Regional Economic Structures In Colombia written by Jaime Alfredo Bonet and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with categories.

One of the features observed in the Colombian economy during the second half of the 20th century is an increase in the share of the tertiary sectors in the GDP. This work has new evidence that help to understand this process in the Colombian regions, by using data on departmental GDP and employment. The evidence does not show a clear relationship between the tertiary production and the relative economic performance. However, the employment data reveals that those regions with a higher economic development have a greater employment in the tertiary sectors and a lower level of labor informality. Finally, some results support the hypothesis that the lagged regions trend to present a spurious tertiary transformation, while the prosperous ones are more associated to a genuine one.

Rural regions in Colombia have untapped potential to boost wealth and well-being in the country. Despite remarkable economic growth over the last two decades, Colombia’s development policy needs to increase its focus on rurality, as regional inequalities remain high by OECD standards and structural challenges still prevent greater development in rural places.
