Here in more than 200 pictures are the people, places, and events that shaped the first 150 years of The University of Michigan. The University of Michigan: A Pictorial History is an exciting visual panorama of change and growth marking a century and a half of educational leadership. The pictures in this book bring to mind the struggles and achievements of the University from its visionary beginning to the sesquicentennial year. There are pictures of student life and activities, organizations, dramatic presentations, social affairs, athletic contests, classrooms, buildings new and old, academic ceremonies, presidents, distinguished professors, and the campuses, which spread far beyond the boundaries of the original forty acres. Other pictures recall milestones in the University's history: expeditions to Africa and Antarctica, the announcement of the Salk vaccine, and the visit of John F. Kennedy, who first mentioned the idea of the Peace Corps on the steps of the University of Michigan Union. Bordin has written a brief text and picture legends that outline the University's history and add many colorful details. But the real story is in the pictures. They bring back to life the illustrious past of a great University.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula was a major destination for Finns during the peak years of migration in the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. Several Upper Peninsula communities had large Finnish populations and Finnish churches, lodges, cooperative stores, and temperance societies. Ishpeming and Hancock, especially, were important nationally as Finnish cultural centers. Originally published in Finnish in 1967 by Armas K. E. Holmio, History of the Finns in Michigan, translated into English by Ellen M. Ryynanen, brings the story of the contribution of Finnish immigrants into the mainstream of Michigan history. Holmio combines firsthand experience and personal contact with the first generation of Finnish immigrants with research in Finnish-language sources to create an important and compelling story of an immigrant group and its role in the development of Michigan.

Chronicles Of A Radical Criminologist written by Gregg Barak and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-15 with Social Science categories.

Over the past five decades, prominent criminologist Gregg Barak has worked as an author, editor, and book review editor; his large body of work has been grounded in traditional academic prose. His new book, Chronicles of a Radical Criminologist, while remaining scholarly in its intent, departs from the typical academic format. The book is a a first-person account that examines the linkages between one scholar's experiences as a criminologist from the late 1960s to the present and the emergence and evolution of radical criminology as a challenge to developments in mainstream criminology. Barak draws upon his own experiences over this half-century as a window into the various debates and issues among radical, critical, and technocratic criminologies. In doing so, he revisits his own seminal works, showing how they reflect those periods of criminological development. What holds this book together is the story of how resisting the crimes of the powerful while struggling locally for social justice is the essence of critical criminology. His seven chapters are divided into three parts—academic freedom, academic activism, and academic praxis—and these connected stories link the author's own academic career in Berkeley, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chicago; Alabama; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and across the United States. Barak's eventful scholarly life involved efforts to overcome laws against abortion and homosexuality; to formalize protective practices for women from domestic violence and sexual assault; to oppose racism and classism in the criminal justice system; to challenge the wars on gangs, drugs, and immigrants; and to confront the policies of mass incarceration and the treatment of juvenile offenders.
