Excerpt from Illustrations of the Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland Every shell as far as possible has been drawn after nature, and generally from the largest and most beautiful specimens the Author could meet with. But some of the smaller species, Whose existence rests on the authority of Walker and Adams. He has been obliged to copy from their works, and therefore does not hold himself responsible for their accuracy. That this Work may always retain its place as a Complete System of British and Irish Testaceology, the Author intends from time to time to publish Supplementary Plates, with descriptions, as new discoveries are made and would therefore recommend, that, in binding the book, a few blank leaves should be inserted at the end, which may be cut out, so as to give place to additional plates. The arrangement which the Author has adopted is principally that of Lamarck; he has however found it necessary to introduce some of Dr Leach's Genera, and a few new ones of his own. Excerpt from Illustrations of the Land and Fresh Water Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland: With Figures, Descriptions, and Localities of All the Species; Drawn and Coloured From Nature In the choice of specific names, I have for the most part adopted those of Colonel Montagu, whose work is entitled to the highest praise, from the clearness and simplicity of its descriptions of species; many of which were given prior to those of Continental writers on this branch of science; whose specific names I have given in the numerous synonyms. I have added to the illustrations, figures of an animal of nearly each genus, with short descriptions of their Generic Characters in an appendix, which I thought preferable to mixing them up in the text. Excerpt from Manual of Conchology: Structural and Systematic, With Illustrations of the Species The greater part of this volume is occupied with a review of the family Oleacinidae. This was undertaken primarily to find place for numerous species described originally as Achatina, Stenogyra, Spiraxis etc., in other systematic works referred mainly to the Achatinidae or Stenogyridcae, but now known to belong to the Oleacinidcae. The work has been extended to supplement the account given in Vol. I of this series, bringing the subject up to date. In order to define clearly the position of the Oleacinidae in the system of land snails, the foundation of a new classification of the rapacious snails is briefly outlined, and evidence is presented to show the polyphyletic constitution of the so-called "Agnatha," or "Testacellidae" of authors. The remainder of the volume treats of the Ferussacidcae. This family has an extensive literature in four of five languages; the long list of described species is evidence of the tireless industry of erudite conchologists; and yet, we know so little of the creatures themselves that their classification is still purely guess-work. The best-known member of the group, Cochlicopa, is known, by data herein published, to be practically identical with the terrestrial Achatinellidae. The pallial organs of other genera are unknown, but Ferussacia seems, from the published information, to be an Aulacopod snail. We look to European malacologists, to whom living material is accessible, for information on these little-known snails. The pedal grooves, pallial organs and genitalia of the common genera should be described. In the work on Antillean Oleacinidae I have had the advantage of using the great collection of C. B. Adams which the authorities of Amherst College with great liberality allowed me to study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual of Conchology, Vol. 14: Structural and Systematic, With Illustrations of the Species The author begs those who may use this work to begin by taking apart one specimen of each species to be studied then find the genus by the Key on page xxviii. After a certain amount of practice the genus may be' ascertained by removing valves vii and viii only but guessing it from the external features is in most cases uncertain and unscientific. As a rule, Chitons tell no secrets to those who will not take the trouble to disarticulate them. It is hoped that describers of new species will hereafter state the generic characters of their novelties. It is as rational to describe a bivalve without examining its hinge-teeth, as to notice the outside only of a Chiton. The synonymy is believed to be practically exhaustive, except that useless references to mere lists giving no new information are omitted. Attention should here be directed to the new theories of the origin of important structures of shell and girdle, given on pp. Ix, xii; to the original system of classification (p. Xxiii), and the phylogenies (pp. Xxvii, xxviii). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
