Computers are revolutionizing activities in all areas of life. Physics researchers, accustomed to being at the forefront of technology, have been deeply affected by the computer revolution. This effect has serious implications for what is taught and how it is taught in the physics classroom. Computer-based approaches to physics instruction have been explored at a number of research and development centers throughout the world. The presentation briefly reviews some university efforts in this area, mainly the development of an autonomous multi-media computer assisted instruction (CAI) general-education physics course. Based on a one-term conventional lecture course which has been given successfully at ESU for several years, the CAI course made use of an IBM 1500 instructional system to guide the student through a self-paced program of text book reading assignments, audiotaped lectures, PSSC movies, and cartridged films of demonstration experiments. The student had to pass a diagnostic quiz administered by the computer on the reading assignment before beginning each lesson. At the end of each unit, he was questioned by the computer on the main points of the lesson before proceeding to the next unit. (Author).

ANDRE JONES As everybody knovs, the computer has been used for over ten years in education. Since the first conference at Irvine "The computer in physics instruction" (1965). various meetings on this subject have been organized in many places, which dealt with very different subjects. Work groups have been set up at international level (by the UNESCO, OECD, ... ) and at national level in various countries. Of the prominent extra-European meetings, we will only keep the most important ones. for example those held in the U.S.A. on the "Computer Use in Undergraduate Curriculum" and in Canada, "The Canadian Symposium on Instructional Technology" (1972). As a matter of fact, there have been quite a lot of conferences on this subject in Europe too. For example, the OECD entrusted us with the organizing of a center called U.C.O. 0.1. which would be aimed at two Objectives. On the one hand, to set up a aata bank on the experiments made in the field of the computer use in education; and on the second hand, to stimulate research in this field.
