There was universal regret when in 1612, in consequence, it is said, of his having played tennis in cold weather with insufficient clothing, he caught a severe illness and passed away, after being confined to his bed for a very short time. It is an intellectual, happy, youthful face, with a certain element of pathos about it, which looks out at us from this delightful miniature. The Japanese sword - guard is a flat piece of metal, usually Circular or nearly so, but at times of some other shape, regular or irregular. It has usually three openings, the middle one for the sword-blade, and the others for the leozuha (a small knife) and the hogai, a kind of skewer (literally a hairpin). Sometimes the hogol opening is absent, and sometimes both the smaller holes are plugged. The size of the sword-guard varies, of course, . According to the size of the sword itself; the larger guards are about 4 inches across and carry blades of from 25 to 32 inches in length.
