The causes of the October War in Israel can be traced to the political, economic, and strategic processes that occurred in the Middle East between 1967 and 1973. The papers compiled in this book were presented in the aftermath of the October War at an international colloquium held at Tel Aviv University. The growth 'and power of Middle East oil-producing countries, changes in inter-Arab relations, domestic policies, foreign policies, and strategic changes in the Middle East arena are analyzed and evaluated by American and Israeli scholars. American foreign policy, Soviet military doctrine, and Arab war aims are dealt with as well. The introduction which summarizes the discussion reflects the perspective of December 1974 from which the events of the years 1967-1973 were seen and evaluated.

As potential war with Iraq looms and the Palestinian-Israeli crisis escalates, our need for expert knowledge and opinion about the Middle East could not be greater. This timely political history of the modern Middle East begins with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and takes us right up to current events. Kamrava lays out the historical context of the Middle East of today - the rise and fall of the Ottomans; the trials of independence and state-building; the emergence and fiery spread of nationalism throughout the Middle East; the Arab-Israeli wars in 1967 and 1973; the Iranian revolution of 1978-79; and the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War; and the Gulf War and its aftermath. The profound consequences of these events on contemporary politics in the Middle East are discussed in full, especially in regards to the overall nature of state-society relations within each country and intra-state relations between countries. In addition, three of the most important current political issues of the region are discussed separately"" the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the challenges to economic development, and the question of democracy. The book ends with an evaluation of the most important challenges the Middle East is facing at the present time and is likely to face in the coming decades.

The contributions to this volume are based on papers read at an international confer ence held in Hamburg in May 1978. Some of them are reprinted in their original form, others have been slightly modified in order to incorporate more recent findings. Since the overall concern is Middle Eastern development the various contributions deal with a wide range of problems. Studies on the Middle East are more often than not one-sided because of the pre dominating interest in the Arab-Israeli conflict and the economic factors relating to the supply of oil. At the Hamburg Conference, however, the participants concentrated main lyon examining such aspects of the situation as are far too often relegated to the side lines. In order to illustrate what those neglected topics are one should refer to two major examples: 1) the religio-cultural identity of Arabs and Israelis, 2) the tackling of political issues in Arab and Israeli literature.
