The so-called lull in October 1944 in Lorraine was anything but that. It was Hell for the infantrymen of the 101st Regiment. We lived like animals in our holes in the ground in the mud, cold, wet, and rain under artillery barrages and sniper fire. Men were killed every day. Then came the Third Army offensive of November 8. It was Hell all over again, but there was no lull. We were still covered with mud and we were wet, cold, hungry, and miserable. After attacking one day, we had to get out of our holes and do it all over again the next morning against an enemy that contested every few yards of ground. And we did this for the next five weeks in the same conditions in the fortifications of the Maginot Line until the brief respite in Metz. The story of the 101st Infantry Regiment in Lorraine is told through first person narrative accounts of bloody and violent combat engagements. These are blended with the war diary of the 101st Infantry from August 1944 to May 9, 1945, and the first person campaign reports of the commanding generals of the two main German divisions against which the 101st fought up to mid-November, the 11th Panzer Division and the 361st Volks Grenadier Division. Photographs and maps portray some of these actions.

An Analysis Of The Support Capabilities Of The Forward Deployed Corps written by Gerald K. Johnson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with Armed Forces categories.

This study, through use of model corps, attempts to analyze the capability of the forward deployed corps to sustain itself in combat the first 5 days of a 'come as you are' war in Europe. The analysis is performed in the assumed environment of the anticipated OPFOR capabilities and tactics, the United States 'active defense' response, and the logistics requirements generated by that response. It attempts to determine: if the COSCOM, formulated under the 'austere support' principle, is adequate to support the corps until augmentation can be effected; if the combat service support structure detracts from the corps' combat power; and what changes in the COSCOMs employment can be made to improve combat service support. The analysis indicates an organic transportation capability far less than that required which impacts on support available throughout the logistics services spectrum. Further, support plans presently in effect assume host nation support will provide logistics sufficiency. Recommendations of the analysis include quantifications of hostnation support requirements, a reorganization of the COSCOM battalions and further, more detailed analysis in several logistics areas.

No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great, duty first.—The motto of the First Division. The heroic, hard-fought history of the “Big Red One” is recorded by the men who fought in the campaigns across North Africa and Europe. A regular army unit, the First Infantry Division was one of the first combat formations to move overseas in WWII. Overseas: 7 August 1942. Campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Alsace, Central Europe. Days of Combat: 443. The 1st Infantry Division saw its first combat in World War II in North Africa, landing at Oran and taking part in the initial fighting, 8-10 November 1942. Elements then took part in see-saw combat at Maktar, Medjez el Bab, Kasserine Pass, Gafsa, El Guettar, Beja, and Mateur, 21 January-9 May 1943, helping secure Tunisia. The First was the first ashore in the invasion of Sicily, 10 July 1943; it fought a series of short, fierce battles on the island's tortuous terrain. When that campaign was over, the Division returned to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. The First Division assaulted Omaha Beach on D-day, 6 June 1944, some units suffering 30 percent casualties in the first hour, and secured Formigny and Caumont in the beachhead. The Division followed up the St. Lô breakthrough with an attack on Marigny, 27 July 1944, and then drove across France in a continuous offensive, reaching the German border at Aachen in September. The Division laid siege to Aachen, taking the city after a direct assault, 21 October 1944. The First then attacked east of Aachen through Hürtgen Forest, driving to the Roer, and moved to a rest area 7 December for its first real rest in 6 months' combat, when the von Rundstedt offensive suddenly broke loose, 16 December. The Division raced to the Ardennes, and fighting continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945, helped blunt and turn back the German offensive. Thereupon, the Division attacked and again breached the Siegfried Line, fought across the Roer, 23 February 1945, and drove on to the Rhine, crossing at the Remagen bridgehead, 15-16 March 1945. The Division broke out of the bridgehead, took part in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, captured Paderborn, pushed through the Harz Mountains, and was in Czechoslovakia, at Kinsperk, Sangerberg, and Mnichov, when the war in Europe ended. Richly illustrated with 115 photos and 19 maps.

Forward With Patton written by Robert S. Allen and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-25 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The WWII diary of a US soldier and Soviet spy who worked closely with General Patton is presented in this fully annotated edition. Robert S. Allen is one of the more controversial figures of the Second World War. After serving in France during World War I, he left the military to start a career as a syndicated columnist, eventually becoming the Washington, DC, bureau chief for the Christian Science Monitor. In that time, he also developed a sideline as a paid informant for the KGB. When American entered World War II, Allen rejoined the army to serve as General Patton's chief of situation and executive officer for operations. He was considered such an authority on Patton after the war that Twentieth Century-Fox asked him to develop a film script about the general. In Forward with Patton, John Nelson Rickard presents a complete, annotated edition of Colonel Allen's World War II diary for 1944-1945. The entries reflect Allen's private thoughts on the Third Army and provide an invaluable perspective on Patton, whom Allen deeply admired.
