Volumes 4 and 5 of the Library of Early Christianity, The Correspondence of Theodoret of Cyrus: The Collectio Sirmondiana, present a text and translation of the largest of three collections of Theodoret's letters that have come down to us (first edited by the Jesuit father Jacques Sirmond, Paris 1642). Though pastor of the remote see of Cyrus in Syria, Theodoret was one of the major teachers of the eastern Christian church of the late fourth and early fifth century. These 147 letters place before us the myriad concerns, both spiritual and secular, of a late-antique bishop: Theodoret expounds theological and moral issues for fellow churchmen, begs imperial officials for tax relief for local landowners, provides for the sustenance and safety of refugees from the Vandal war in Africa, thanks a friend for a gift of wine. The edition of the Greek text is the work of John Petruccione. A textual introduction explains the relationships among the manuscripts, and the critical notes the choices made where the text is uncertain. The historical / theological introduction is the work of István Pásztori-Kupán, one of the foremost expositors of the thought of Theodoret and of his Antiochene predecessors and contemporaries. Two maps locate for the reader the place names mentioned in the letters, and three indices (a Scriptural Index, General Index, and Index of Modern Authors) complement the notes attached to the text and translation.

Theodoret of Cyrus on Romans 11:26: Recovering an Early Christian Elijah Redivivus Tradition explores the interesting reading of Romans 11:26 offered by the fifth-century Antiochene bishop Theodoret of Cyrus, who states that «the Jews will believe when the excellent Elijah comes, bringing to them the doctrine of faith.» Surveying the diverse Elijah redivivus traditions of Middle Judaism and early Christianity, the author identifies the two main trajectories of Christian Elijah redivivus traditions that emerge. Theodoret of Cyrus (c.393-c.466) was the most able Antiochene theologian in the defence of Nestorius from the Council of Ephesus in 431 to the Council of Chalcedon in 451. While the works of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Nestorius are extant today only in translations or in fragments, Theodoret's voluminous works are largely available in their original Greek. This study of his writings throws considerable light on the theology of those councils and the final evolution and content of Antiochene Christology. Clayton demonstrates that Antiochene Christology was rooted in the concern to maintain the impassibility of God the Word and is consequently a two-subject Christology. Its fundamental philosophical assumptions about the natures of God and humanity compelled the Antiochenes to assert that there are two subjects in the Incarnation: the Word himself and a distinct human personality. This Christology is not the hypostatic union of the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon.

Theodoret’s People sheds new light on religious clashes of the mid-fifth century regarding the nature (or natures) of Christ. Adam M. Schor focuses on Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus, his Syrian allies, and his opponents, led by Alexandrian bishops Cyril and Dioscorus. Although both sets of clerics adhered to the Nicene creed, their contrasting theological statements led to hostilities, violence, and the permanent fracturing of the Christian community. Schor closely examines council transcripts, correspondence, and other records of communication. Using social network theory, he argues that Theodoret’s doctrinal coalition was actually a meaningful community, bound by symbolic words and traditions, riven with internal rivalries, and embedded in a wider world of elite friendship and patronage.
