Excerpt from The Coraddi, Vol. 36: October, 1931 When you were seven and chubby and trudging manfully around with your big brother and the freckle-faced boy next door who had two white rats, and they D-double dared you to Steal a copper penny off of the top limb on the cherry tree, you did it - didn't you? You drew yourself up to your seven-year - old height and proudly clambered up the trunk. You were afraid not to take a D-double dare even though the limbs wiggled and the ground was a mile below. But after it was all over and you shakily came back to earth, a great satisfaction took the place of fear. The picture changes now; you are older, far more worldly-wise, no longer impulsive and alert, yet a dare should appeal to that latent Streak of adventure which lies beneath the veneer of your sophistication. Excerpt from Reflector, Vol. 9: February, 1931 What a glorious thing it is to travel! How wonderful it is to see, in reality, those places and things about which we read! And what pleasant memories these jaunts of ours bring back to us! Perhaps you would like to look back on my memories with me. Let me tell you about the first ocean trip I ever took. That was when I was eight years old. My father had been ordered to Santo Domingo. Naturally, his family must follow him. Mother and I sailed from this same old Boston Harbor. In three days we arrived at Norfolk, Vir ginia, where we were to take the army trans port. Well, that transport was the worst I have ever seen. It is an ex-german ship and makes only from ten to eleven knots full speed. Of course, you know what it is to be a bad sailor. I found that out about an hour after we sailed. Luxury Arts Of The Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and has been published by Getty Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-01 with Art categories.

Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
