This special re-print edition of the Cotswold Sheep Society's book "The Cotswold Sheep Flock Book with the Origin and History of Cotswold Sheep, Volume 1" contains contains historical information on Cotswold Sheep. The Cotswold sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the Cotswold hills of the southern midlands of England. It is a dual-use breed providing both meat and wool. By 1831, this breed had been introduced to the United States by Christopher Dunn of near Albany, New York. Like other longwool breeds, the Cotswold was often used for crossbreeding in early times. By 1914 over 760,000 had been recorded in the USA and Canada by the American Cotswold Record Association. The breed was seen as a way of adding staple length to other breeds while not reducing the size of the carcase or thickness of wool. Written in 1892, included are registration details of British bred Cotswold Sheep flocks in the 1890's, leading rams and ewes, prizewinners of the day, breeder association activities and practical information on Cotswold Sheep. A treasure house of information for those interested in the history of the Cotswold Sheep. Note: This edition is a perfect facsimile of the original edition and is not set in a modern typeface. As a result, some type characters and images might suffer from slight imperfections or minor shadows in the page background.

By 1831, this breed had been introduced to the United States by Christopher Dunn of near Albany, New York. While Christopher Dunn imported only one Cotswold ram to cross with his English Leicester ewes. The resulting crosses were so impressive that they prompted William Henry Sotham (funded by the Hon. Erastus Corning, also of Albany) to make extensive imports of Cotswold sheep from the flock of William Hewer of Northleach, Gloucestershire, England. The Cotswolds constitute a distinctive region with a gentle, well-loved landscape. The Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement and the powerful influence of medieval lords of the manor all contributed to the pattern of hamlet and village, church and parish, the system of farming in open fields and to the creation of the market towns.
