The Crawling Chaos" is a short story by American writers H. P. Lovecraft and Winifred V. Jackson (first published April 1921 in the United Cooperative. As in their other collaboration, "The Green Meadow", the tale was credited to "Elizabeth Berkeley" (Jackson) and "Lewis Theobald, Jun" (Lovecraft).[1] Lovecraft wrote the entire text, but Jackson is also credited since the story was based on a dream she experienced.

Some of H. P. Lovecraft's most fascinating work came from a time in his life that he was forced, by economic survival, to ghostwrite, collaborate and revise the work of others in the field. Here Lovecraft Scholar S. T. Joshi collects the best of these revisions and collaborations in a two volume set to be published this year from Arcane Wisdom Press The Crawling Chaos and Others is the first of these two volumes. This edition is painstakingly annotated, and includes an introduction and bibliography by S. T. Joshi. The book is a must for the Lovecraft enthusiast and scholar alike.

Two stories by H.P. Lovecraft, master of cosmic horror.DagonThe story a tortured, morphine-addicted man who relates an incident that occurred during his service as an officer during World War I. His cargo ship is captured by an Imperial German sea-raider in one of the most open and least frequented parts of the broad Pacific. He escapes on a lifeboat and drifts aimlessly, south of the equator, until he eventually finds himself stranded on a slimy expanse of hellish black mire which extended about him in monotonous undulations as far as could see ... First published in The Vagrant, November 1919, reprinted in Weird Tales, October 1923.The Crawling ChaosAfter a disembodied sensation of falling, a man finds himself within a strange beautiful room containing exotic furniture, where a pounding sound from outside inspires an inexplicable sense of dread within him. Determined to identify the origin of this sound, he moves towards a window and observes a terrifying scene of fifty-foot waves and seething vortex consuming the shoreline at an incredible rate. Sensing imminent danger, he quickly exits the building. Fleeing the waves, the man travels inland. The narrator eventually arrives in a valley with tropical grass extending above his head and a great palm tree in the center. Driven by curiosity despite his fear, he crawls on his hands and knees toward the great palm ... Based on a dream experienced by Winifred V. Jackson, credited as "Elizabeth Berkeley," the story first appeared in the United Cooperative, April 1921.

Of the pleasures and pains of opium much has been written. The ecstasies and horrors of De Quincey and the paradis artificiels of Baudelaire are preserved and interpreted with an art which makes them immortal, and the world knows well the beauty, the terror and the mystery of those obscure realms into which the inspired dreamer is transported. But much as has been told, no man has yet dared intimate the nature of the phantasms thus unfolded to the mind, or hint at the direction of the unheard-of roads along whose ornate and exotic course the partaker of the drug is so irresistibly borne. De Quincey was drawn back into Asia, that teeming land of nebulous shadows whose hideous antiquity is so impressive that "the vast age of the race and name overpowers the sense of youth in the individual," but farther than that he dared not go. Those who have gone farther seldom returned, and even when they have, they have been either silent or quite mad. I took opium but once -- in the year of the plague, when doctors sought to deaden the agonies they could not cure. There was an overdose -- my physician was worn out with horror and exertion -- and I travelled very far indeed. In the end I returned and lived, but my nights are filled with strange memories, nor have I ever permitted a doctor to give me opium again. The pain and pounding in my head had been quite unendurable when the drug was administered, Of the future I had no heed; to escape, whether by cure, unconsciousness, or death, was all that concerned me. I was partly delirious, so that it is hard to place the exact moment of transition, but I think the effect must have begun shortly before the pounding ceased to be painful.
