This innovative collection of essays explores the ways in which islands have been used, imagined and theorised, both by island dwellers and continentals. This study considers how island dwellers conceived of themselves and their relation to proximate mainlands, and examines the fascination that islands have long held in the European imagination. The collection addresses the significance of islands in the Atlantic economy of the eighteenth century, the exploration of the Pacific, the important role played by islands in the process of decolonisation, and island-oriented developments in postcolonial writing. Islands were often seen as natural colonies or settings for ideal communities but they were also used as dumping grounds for the unwanted, a practice which has continued into the twentieth century. The collection argues the need for an island-based theory within postcolonial studies and suggests how this might be constructed. Covering a historical span from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, the contributors include literary and postcolonial critics, historians and geographers.

This book aims to clarify the present situation of the relations between small island countries and territories on the one hand and the great powers, mainland areas, and mega-islands on the other, and explores how small island countries and territories preserve and build their identity under globalization. The first part presents papers on issues that are related to Okinawa: the American military presence, the formation of a global human network, and the history of and language revitalization in Okinawa. The second part includes papers on security in East Asia and the Pacific Region: the history of and present issues in international relations within the South and East China Sea areas. Though known for some time, the recent flurry of interest in this extraordinary text has been increased by the efforts of the Florida Ancient Cultures Project. FACP has been instrumental in funding translation efforts and providing staff support for this work.What has come to be known as The Creation Hymn of the Islands is not a particularly ancient text in its current form. That is, most experts agree that it was composed in the early 19th century. However, within this text there are preserved linguistic elements of truly ancient origin. This has led to a scholarly consensus that the two-centuries-old manuscript reflects a several-millennia-old story of creation myth.The Creation Hymn of the Islands is not a lengthy one, at least as we have it preserved today. In its current form, it appears to begin with a very old story of the world's beginning. This first section is followed by the anonymous 19th century author's addition to the poem.It is referred to as a poem because of subject matter, structure, and language. The Hymn is written in a strange, hybridized language of ancient Calusa words, but with English grammar and form. There is a significant use of previously unknown proto-Calusa words. When these words are used, there often follows a gloss in English, explaining the word. [More about this in the Commentary.]Much remains unknown about this Creation Hymn. I entitle this book Tropical Scripture because of the growing consensus as to how the poem functioned within early native society. The oral sharing of this myth would have been heard as sacred story. It answered the how and why of their beautiful world. And its eventual degradation.To gain something of the sense of this Hymn, as felt by the People, try to read it and meditate on it as scripture. And then sit with it.Following this introduction, there is a full presentation of the text of The Creation Hymn of the Islands, then a verse-by-verse Commentary on the scripture. More information about the nature of the poem, linguistically and theologically, will be set forth in this Commentary, the longest of the book's sections.
