65 Years after the War of His Return. Sackery is one of the Vedrethal, a warrior-servant who fought for the Vedreron during the days before mankind would arrive on the continent Arún. He promised to keep the daughter of a man he trusted safe. He journeys with the girl's mother, Cyridel Elendsah, an Ellúndar Princess of the Míran kingdom-city of Ilhivendal. It is a hard road they follow. Nialla, daughter of Galron and Cyridel, is a child born of two worlds. But she grew up on the road, never staying anywhere for too long, calling "home" wherever she lays her head. Hidden amongst the roving masses, Sackery of the Vedrethal leads Cyridel and Nialla to the ends of the world to build a more peaceful life away from war and politics. Yet, no matter how far they go, danger tracks their course. A story pushes them on, searching for that moment of safety. Will they find it? Or will they suffer loss at the cruel hands of a distant past?

“Crows and people share similar traits and social strategies. To a surprising extent, to know the crow is to know ourselves.”—from the Preface From the cave walls at Lascaux to the last painting by Van Gogh, from the works of Shakespeare to those of Mark Twain, there is clear evidence that crows and ravens influence human culture. Yet this influence is not unidirectional, say the authors of this fascinating book: people profoundly influence crow culture, ecology, and evolution as well. John Marzluff and Tony Angell examine the often surprising ways that crows and humans interact. The authors contend that those interactions reflect a process of “cultural coevolution.” They offer a challenging new view of the human-crow dynamic—a view that may change our thinking not only about crows but also about ourselves. Featuring more than 100 original drawings, the book takes a close look at the influences people have had on the lives of crows throughout history and at the significant ways crows have altered human lives. In the Company of Crows and Ravens illuminates the entwined histories of crows and people and concludes with an intriguing discussion of the crow-human relationship and how our attitudes toward crows may affect our cultural trajectory.

This volume contains the personal recollections of Apsaalooke Chief Plenty Coups as he described them to Willem Wildschut in the early 1920s. The individual narratives focus on Plenty Coups's early years as a warrior when he rose to prominence within the tribe and conclude before he came to be regarded as the principal chief of the entire Apsaalooke Nation in 1907, a position he held after the death of Chief Pretty Eagle in 1904 until his own death in 1932. Autobiographical information of Native leaders of Plenty Coups's status is rare, and without such direct personal narratives, scholars are forced to use external sources in an attempt to reconstruct and contextualize major events as well as the minutiae of daily activities that an individual considered to be pivotal in his or her life. In this particular instance, Plenty Coups's recollections contain information not just about his personal exploits but also provide a wealth of cultural information about the Apsaalooke at the apex of the Plains Indian horse culture in the nineteenth century shortly before the onset of the reservation period. Bill Mercer As former Crow Historian Grant Bulltail noted, "This book records the acts of Plenty Coups who stood in the front ranks of battle to protect our sacred lands and culture." Grant Bulltail
