How can Christian theology confess God as both other than the world and also related to it in a way that compromises neither of these? Most modern thought has offered a simple reply: it cannot. Christ at the Crux analyzes one element of the roots of this denial and charts a route toward rapprochement. The Christologies of eight theologians offer various attempts to relate the Creator and the creature in Christ: Irenaeus of Lyon, Cyril of Alexandria, John Philoponus, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Zizioulas, Robert Jenson, and Colin Gunton. Within the patristic era the question is grounded in theology about the incarnation; with the Reformers the focus is on the mediation between creation and Creator; and with the three modern theologians the breadth of the issue is completed with theology proper. Together, these eight offer a grand-scale perspective on much of the christological possibilities for conceiving the relation between God and everything else. In the end Paul Cumin shows how the doctrine of the Trinity appears to open new possibilities for Christology and in particular for the way theology about the Spirit enables a reimagining of those items of Christian thought most likely at the roots of our modern rejection of God-as-other.

"The Crux of Theology puts Luther's teachings concerning the cross in dialogue with the preamble of the United Declaration's Declaration of Human Rights, which advances a vision of the common good wherein freedom, justice and peace are enjoyed by all. Using diverse voices, it re-frames theological loci and raises critical contextual questions"--

Many preachers and teachers of preaching talk about the gospel; few name it. Theologies of the Gospel in Context assembles a gifted group of homileticians who think that preachers need to be able to articulate the gospel not "in general," but in a certain time and place, in context. They consider what gospel sounds like for people under oppression, in capitalist economies, in neocolonial contexts, for survivors of trauma, and for disestablished mainline churches marred by racism. Preachers will appreciate these preacher/scholars' desire to articulate the gospel with clarity, especially since the term is so often left unexplained. Homileticians will see a new genre of doing their work as teachers and researchers in preaching: a vision that helps preaching see itself not just as an adjunct to exegesis or communication, but a place of doing theology. In these pages homiletics is more than technique, it is a truly theological discipline.

Christianity in the United States is in crisis. Liberalism is declining, evangelicalism is splintering, increasing numbers of Christians are slipping away from churches, and more and more young people are for various reasons finding Christianity as they conceive it (a metaphysical thought system, or society of science-deniers, or an ideology for oppressors) not just implausible but repellent. At the same time, Christians across denominational and ideological divides are rediscovering a moral core, especially in the Jesus of the Gospels, that reactivates and unites them, and this kind of faith appeals to many who consider themselves averse to all traditional organized religion. But any revitalized Christian faith is going to need to understand its rootedness in, and interpretation of, Christianity’s foundational texts and traditions. Noted theologian Douglas F. Ottati steps in to offer a theology for this new era. Combining deep learning in texts and traditions with astute awareness of contemporary questions and patterns of thought and life, he asks: what does it mean, in our time, to understand the God of the Bible as Creator and Redeemer? Distilling the content of Christian faith into seventy concise propositions, he explains each in lucid, cogent prose. A Theology for the Twenty-First Century will be an essential textbook for those training for ministry in our current climate, a wise guide for contemporary believers who wonder how best to understand and communicate their faith, and an inviting and intelligent resource for serious inquirers who wonder whether the way of Jesus might help them grasp the real world while remaining open to the transcendent.

Radical Two-Kingdoms theology would have us believe that God has created a divided world. It is a world bifurcated into two realms, one of “nature” and the other of “grace,” whereby the things common to believer and unbeliever are understood to occupy a distinct and autonomous realm, “nature,” while the things particular to believers are located in a separate, “higher,” “spiritual” realm, the realm of “grace.” Supposedly, the latter is to be kept unsoiled by contact with the natural realm, which then goes by the name of “the world.” The Christian as Christian is therefore only responsible for the realm of grace; but as human being, undistinguished from unbelievers, he is responsible to act in the realm of nature. By what criterion? Something that goes under the name of natural law. The crux of the issue is, the two realms have nothing in common, the better to preserve the spiritual realm from contamination from below. This may sound pious and spiritually pure, but it is in fact a recipe for human autonomy and nothing less than a betrayal of the Christian’s calling to pursue the kingdom of Christ in and through the work of everyday, “natural” life. For one day every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is King of Kings, Lord of Lords; and the glory and honor of the nations will be brought into His kingdom. This includes culture and politics, for there are no such Two Kingdoms. Radical Two-Kingdoms theology is therefore an invitation to a combination of escapism and humanistic political activism. It is a plague on the church which needs to be confronted at every turn. “Woe unto the preacher who does not sound the alarm when the Good News is attacked from within the church, when the Law is pitted against the Gospel, and when Christ's Crown Rights over all of life is disputed. Especially in this day and age when unity is elevated far above purity and when virtue signaling seems to be the order of the day, I am most grateful for this excellent contribution by Rev. Bret McAtee. This work robs the serious reader of every excuse not to stand up against a false and dangerous doctrine – one that is by no means a minor issue, but an assault on the Gospel of Jesus Christ itself. I am most thankful that McAtee has answered the call and dealt with the assailants, not with cheap rhetoric, but by biblically interacting with their own words” – Rev. Sacha Walicord

We at Regent College are proud to present the best of CRUX for the years 1979-89 in this volume. With Heart, Mind & Strength exemplifies what we are trying to do at Regent College -- to give our best, our all, to God. We have selected essays from the pages of the College journal, written by faculty, alumni and friends, on relevant issues, where the Bible meets today's world. The collection reflects the viewpoints and the wide range of interests we have -- biblical studies, theology, history, spirituality and interdisciplinary matters. The authors include Klaus Bockmuehl, J.I. Packer, James Houston, Carl E. Armerding, Gordon Fee and W. Ward Gasque -- all well known through their own books, all appreciated by the students at Regent College. For over twenty years, Regent has been concerned with the equipping of the laity, developing a new generation of thinking and acting Christians. We believe that we will be better able to interact with the modern world for having studied in an open atmosphere of inquiry and reverence. And for eleven years, the College has published CRUX as its voice, a place where ideas may be put forward for illumination, discussion and correction. We hope you find these essays to be a help in your own pilgrimage.

Theologia Crucis written by Robert Cady Saler and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Religion categories.

Recovery of Paul and Luther's theology of the cross has been an enduring legacy of twentieth-century theology, and in our own day the topic has continued to expand as more and more global voices join the conversation. The array of literature produced on the cross and its theological significance can be overwhelming. In this readable and concise introduction, Robert Saler provides an overview of the key motifs present in theologians seeking to understand how the cross of Jesus Christ informs the work of theology, ministry, and activism on behalf of victims of injustice today. He also demonstrates how theology of the cross can be a lens through which to understand crucial questions of our time related to the nature of beauty, God's redemption, and the forces which seek to overwhelm both. Ranging from Luther and Bonhoeffer to James Cone and feminist theologians, Saler makes this literature accessible to all who wish to understand how the cross shapes Christian claims about God and God's work on behalf of the world. ""In Theologia Crucis, Robert Saler has provided a compelling and timely 'field guide' to the significance and power of the cross in theological discourse. Impressive in its scope and incisive in its analysis, Saler's work brings a fresh perspective to the theology of the cross. He invites us to return to the foot of Christ's cross, there to find strength and sustenance for the work of peace, reconciliation, and justice in our own time."" --Brent A. R. Hege, Butler University ""This book springs from deep learning and faith. It demonstrates, in an accessible tone, that despite (or maybe because of) the ubiquity of the Cross, we constantly need to be called back to a realization of what the Cross is: an impossible scandal, the most profound sign of divine love, the transfiguration of the world, and the transformation of our lives. What's more, we come to see that Luther's theology of the Cross is enlightening for all Christians."" --Peter C. Bouteneff, Professor of Systematic Theology, St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary ""Refusing to jettison the legacy of Luther, Robert Saler dares to place the crucified Christ in full conversation with what some might deem the unlikeliest of partners, like a murdered Sandra Bland, a martyred Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a mystical and musical Arvo Part, an emptied (but not empty) Sebastiao Rodrigues, a metaphysical feminist, Valerie Saiving. The reality of the resurrection is what finally irrupts with hope for those who walk this prophetic path with the talented Dr. Saler."" --John Arthur Nunes, President, Concordia College-New York Robert Saler is Research Professor of Lutheran Studies and Executive Director of the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.
