North Of Havana written by Martin Garbus and has been published by The New Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-04 with Political Science categories.

From one of America's leading legal minds, a riveting look at the U.S.-Cuban relationship seen through the lens of a nearly impossible case During his distinguished career, Martin Garbus has established himself as a well-known trial lawyer representing the likes of Daniel Ellsberg and Leonard Peltier. But there is no story Garbus wants to tell more than that of his most challenging case: representing five Cuban spies marooned in the U.S. prison system and his efforts to get them out. North of Havana tells the story of a spy ring sent by Cuba in the early 1990s to infiltrate anti-Communist extremists in Miami. Erroneously charged by the U.S. government in connection with the 1996 shootdown of two planes circulating anti-Castro leaflets over Havana, the spies—in the absence of evidence—were convicted in 2000 of conspiracy to commit espionage and murder. Caught up in the sweep of history, the Cuban Five, as they became known, played a central role over the next decade in the recent thaw in Cuban-American relations. Set in Miami and Havana, North of Havana is a mesmerizing tale of international intrigue, espionage, and political gamesmanship that continues to play a shaping role in American foreign policy and presidential elections. In the process, the books shows how the justice system can be, and is, subverted for political purposes and gives readers insight into one of the most fascinating legal cases of our times.

Here is the story of political prisoners finally freed in December 2014, after being held captive by the United States since the late 1990s. Through the 1980s and 1990s, violent anti-Castro groups based in Florida carried out hundreds of military attacks on Cuba, bombing hotels and shooting up Cuban beaches with machine guns. The Cuban government struck back with the Wasp Network—a dozen men and two women—sent to infiltrate those organizations. The Last Soldiers of the Cold War tells the story of those unlikely Cuban spies and their eventual unmasking and prosecution by US authorities. Five of the Cubans received long or life prison terms on charges of espionage and murder. Global best-selling Brazilian author Fernando Morais narrates the riveting tale of the Cuban Five in vivid, page-turning detail, delving into the decades-long conflict between Cuba and the US, the growth of the powerful Cuban exile community in Florida, and a trial that eight Nobel Prize winners condemned as a travesty of justice. The Last Soldiers of the Cold War is both a real-life spy thriller and a searching examination of the Cold War’s legacy.

On February 24, 1996, three Brothers to the Rescue aircraft took off from South Florida on a search and rescue mission meant to save the lives of Cuban balseros - yet their mission would end in death, with two planes shot down by Cuban MiG fighters. Four aviators were lost - Carlos Costa, Mario de la Pena, Armando Alejandre and Pablo Morales. Their murders were perpetuated by La Red Avispa, the "Cuban Five" spy ring and a DIA analyst turned Cuban agent, Ana Belen Montes, Castro's Queen of Spies. Betrayal: Clinton, Castro & The Cuban Five compiles extensive research, sworn testimony and fact. It reveals a cover up spanning the Florida Straits, from Havana to Washington D.C. It uncovers that senior Clinton Administration officials, including Sandy Berger, Bill Richardson, Richard Nuccio, retired Pentagon brass, U.S diplomats and even members of the U.S. media were forewarned by Castro of the shootdown, yet somehow did nothing to stop the murders. Cuba declares them heroes, yet the "Cuban Five" are serving jail sentences for espionage and murder. Now, in an opening gesture toward improving relations with Havana, the Obama Administration contemplates their release - but will the USA have to go so far as to pardon murderers?"
