Lady Charlotte Astley is burdened with more things than London's best monster hunter should be-solving supernatural crimes and being a proper lady.First, she must make the streets of London safe for everyone-humans and supernaturals alike. Second, Charlotte is unmarried and has no prospects-a capital offense according to the upper crust. Social niceties don't simply disappear because vampires and werewolves appear in London and integrate into society; Charlotte's top priority should be marrying a nice human boy-at least according to her aunt. Never mind that her best friend, Lord Cosmo Wilmott (devilishly charming, mischievous, wildly handsome, and vampire) is hoping Charlotte would be willing to defy society and convention for him. When supernatural corpses begin appearing in Spitalfields alleyways, all whispering a single word and drained of their souls, even Charlotte is perplexed. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's supernatural society? Will her monster-hunting and sleuthing abilities find this soul-eater or will London explode into a second civil war? Finally, who is the behind these soulless corpses, and do they have any raspberry scones?

A special eBook original short story, in which the eleven-year-old connoisseur of chemistry is immersed in her element: solving a mystery! Murder! the letter says, Come at once. Anson House, Greyminster, Staircase No. 3. How can Flavia de Luce resist such an urgent plea? After all, examining a dead body sounds like a perfectly splendid way to spend a Sunday. So Flavia hops upon her trusted bicycle, Gladys, whose rubber tires hiss happily along the rainy road, and arrives at her father's mist-shrouded old school. There, a terrified boy leads her to the loo where, sitting in a bathtub, is what appears to be a statue. But, no: To Flavia's surprise, the thing is in fact a naked dead man. Save his face, he seems to have been carved out of copper. Never one to shy away from the macabre, Flavia gets to work-only to find that when an investigation begins with a metallic cadaver, ever more curious twists are to be expected.

Something extraordinary is going on. Science is finding that much of the paranormal is really normal. But even though research is uncovering the truth of psychic phenomena, psychics rarely win lottery jackpots. Why is that? Evidence increasingly indicates that our consciousness survives physical death, but few people converse with loved ones who have passed away. Why is that? The statistical probability that our universe exists at all is remote, yet the scientific paradigm is reluctant to allow that it might be designed. Why is that? And repeatedly, fewer people are involved in cataclysmic tragedies than the odds would expect for the time and location. Yet most of us do not recognize intuitive hints to avoid serious misfortune. Why is that? For centuries, science dismissed much paranormal weirdness as coincidence without seriously looking at it. It is now discovering that we are experiencing more than coincidence. But much remains hidden, intuition is rarely obvious, and psychic errors abound. Why? Why indeed? Hop aboard to explore some answers.

This improbable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.

Although fantasy and supernatural literature have long and celebrated histories, many critics contend that the fantastic and the supernatural have no place in the logical, rational, world of the detective story. This book is the first extensive study of the fantastic in detective fiction and it explores the highly debated question of whether detective fiction and the fantastic can comfortably coexist. The "locked room" mystery--which often uses the fantastic as a red herring to eventually be debunked by reason and logic--has long been among the most popular subgenres of detective fiction. This book also explores stories featuring almost supernaturally gifted detectives, stories where the supernatural is truly encountered, and stories with ambiguous endings. Close to 500 detective stories from 1841 to 2000, in which the fantastic or supernatural plays a central role, are discussed and analyzed. Although not all the stories are judged to be successful as detective tales, in the great majority, the fantastic enlivens the tale and deepens the mystery without weakening the detective elements.

Horror intends to create an eerie and frightening atmosphere for the reader. Prevalent elements include ghosts, demons, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, the Devil, witches, monsters, dystopian and apocalyptic worlds, serial killers, cannibalism, psychopaths, cults, dark magic, Satanism, the macabre, gore, and torture. “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form… As may naturally be expected of a form so closely connected with primal emotion, the horror-tale is as old as human thought and speech themselves”. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is anthologized in his book Tales of the Jazz Age. In 1860 Baltimore, Benjamin is born with the physical appearance of a 70-year-old man, already capable of speech. His father Roger invites neighborhood boys to play with him and orders him to play with children's toys, but Benjamin obeys only to please his father. At five, Benjamin is sent to kindergarten but is quickly withdrawn after he repeatedly falls asleep during child activities. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was released as a motion picture late in 2008 starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and directed by David Fincher. The screenplay differs greatly from the short story. Only the title, Benjamin's name, and most aspects of the aging process are retained in the screenplay. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s.

Kaija Saariaho is internationally recognized as a leading figure in contemporary music, enjoying a well-deserved reputation for works that are both creatively original and of considerable appeal. Her music communicates with a refreshingly broad audience, and this special achievement deserves careful consideration. In the first symposium book in English to be dedicated exclusively to this single figure, scholars from both the UK and Saariaho's native Finland bring a range of perspectives to her richly varied output. Uncovering the compositional, historical, cultural and sociological issues that have resulted in such critical acclaim lies at the heart of this collection of essays. Saariaho's approach to composition is an interdisciplinary one; it embraces a number of art forms - visual, literary and musical - in works that explore a creative dialogue between image, continuity and time. While such diversity is readily accommodated in a multi-authored collection, the consistency of an underlying compositional identity and integrity is also an important trait. The grouping of these essays into three strands - 'visions', 'narratives' and 'dialogues' - reflects the wide range of Saariaho's creative preoccupations while subscribing to a carefully structured succession of commentaries.
