With the development of sensor technology, wireless communications, big data, and machine learning, there is an increasing interest in technologies and solutions that assess and predict the state of equipment and assets within various industrial settings. These technologies aim to collect information from multiple sources about infrastructure asset status. Then, through current and historical data analysis, this configuration of technologies delivers intelligence on current and future asset status to a maintenance operator or manager to inform optimal maintenance decision-making. These technologies are known under different terms – remote condition monitoring, e-maintenance, prognostic systems, predictive maintenance, and smart or intelligent infrastructure. Despite the promise of remote condition monitoring and predictive technologies, there is a growing concern with such technologies because they can be difficult or impractical to use. Understanding and mitigating potential human factors issues could ensure that such vast investments are not wasted. This book considers, in depth, the challenges placed on users of current and future condition monitoring systems. Its primary focus is to understand the cognitive processes, including managing alarms, interpreting data, and collaborating with automation. The book describes a range of human factors methods that can be used to understand the current and future functioning of people and technology in an enhanced maintenance and asset monitoring context. The book also presents a framework for describing these issues systematically and presents the resulting design considerations to increase the effectiveness of individual operators and organisations as a whole.

This volume condenses over 60 years of clinical efforts with thousands of individuals in hundreds of organizations into a set of clear, concise, understandable principles and concepts that can be applied by managers to improve their performance and the performance of their organizations. Through multiple examples and illustrations, a framework is presented that enables managers to master the executive role. While there are many books that purport to provide methods or processes for managerial and executive development, most are based on empirical research efforts, or are largely anecdotal in nature, describing particular managers in particular organizations. There has been very little attempt to take clinical research with practicing executives and distil a series of principles and concepts that consistently predict success in the executive role. This book provides insights into the processes whereby managerial development occurs in an organization. Based on clinical interactions from decades of experience working with practicing managers, a series of unique models, frameworks, and concepts have been developed that provide the reader with novel ways in which to assess the process of executive development. The concepts, frameworks, and models also offer practicing managers techniques that can improve managerial performance and drive organizational outcomes.

This book is a resource for those who are new to intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), as well as those with a great deal of experience with them. This is the tenth book in our Design Recommendations for Intelligent Tutoring Systems book series. The focus of this book is on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analyses of varying components of ITSs. Each chapter in the book represents a different topic area, and includes a SWOT analysis that is specific to that topic and how it relates to ITSs. This book can be read in order, or a reader can choose a specific topic area and move directly to that chapter. Each SWOT Analysis describes the current state of the topic area, and how the lessons learned from the analysis could be applied to the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) (Sottilare et al., 2012; Sottilare et al., 2017). GIFT is an ITS architecture that is open-source, modular, and domain independent (Sottilare et al., 2017). Each book in the design recommendations series has addressed a different ITS topic area, and how the work in each chapter can relate to and inform the GIFT architecture. GIFT has continually been in development, with features consistently being added to improve functionality, as well as reduce the skill requirement for authoring content in GIFT. GIFT is freely available in both downloadable and Cloud versions at https://www.GIFTtutoring.org.
