Koh Tao--a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, surrounded by pristine beaches, swathed in sunshine, and a mecca for tourists, divers and backpackers. But "Turtle Island" has its dark side. In 2014, Koh Tao was the site of the brutal double murders of two British backpackers, but theirs weren't the only suspicious backpacker deaths. My name is Suzanne Buchanan. I am the former owner and editor of the Samui Times, a news publication on Koh Samui, and covered the stories of the so-called "backpacker murders" and other suspicious deaths. Although I am a British citizen, because of my investigation and stories, as well as my support for the two Burmese migrant workers sentenced to death for the murders, I had to flee Thailand for my own safety. There is currently an active warrant for my arrest should I return to Thailand, which had been my home for more than twenty years, and I continue to receive death threats. In "THE CURSE OF THE TURTLE" readers can make up their own minds on who is responsible for the murders that so devastated the victims' families. Were the Burmese migrant workers responsible? Or were the powerful, tribal families who run Koh Tao involved? And if so, were they aided by corrupt law enforcement?

The white turtle shone pink in the watercolor light of the sunset, and she let her finger gently trace the intricate honeycomb carving on the animal's back. Everything happened so gradually that she didn't notice at first that the turtle was becoming warmer or that the pink cast had become a rosy glow. She didn't even notice that fog had rolled in and surrounded her feet. In fact, Delta didn't notice these changes at all until the mysterious fog had entirely engulfed her. She stood in the haze still clutching the now-blazing red turtle. Twelve-year-old Delta and her younger brother, Jax, have no idea of the excitement in store when they discover a mysterious carved turtle figurine on the beaches of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. But when the kids become disaster magnets, they realize that their new treasure has magical powers they'd never imagined! Along with their new friend, Darius, the siblings uncover forgotten American history and learn the importance of passing on stories as they travel throughout the Carolina Lowcountry--and time itself--in a race to break the turtle's curse before a hurricane destroys their island home!

The Tomaraho, a subgroup of the Ishir (Chamacoco) of Paraguay, are one of the few remaining indigenous populations who have managed to keep both their language and spiritual beliefs intact. They have lived for many years in a remote region of the Gran Chaco, having limited contact with European or Latin American cultures. The survival of the Tomaraho has been tenuous at best; at the time of this writing there were only eighty-seven surviving members. Ticio Escobar, who lived extensively among the Tomaraho, draws on his acquired knowledge of Ishir beliefs to confront them with his own Western ideology, and records a unique dialogue between cultures that counters traditional anthropological interpretation. The Curse of Nemur—which is part field diary, part art critique, and part cultural anthropology—offers us a view of the world from an entirely new perspective, that of the Ishir. We acquire deep insights into their powerful and enigmatic narrative myths, which find expression in the forms of body painting, feather decoration, dream songs, shamanism, and ritual. Through dramatic photographs, native drawings, extensive examination of color and its importance in Ishir art, and Escobar's lucid observation, The Curse of Nemur illuminates the seamless connection of religious practice and art in Ishir culture. It offers a glimpse of an aesthetic "other," and in so doing, causes us to reexamine Western perspectives on the interpretation of art, belief, and Native American culture.

The Rodain, led by King Elkar, seek dominion over all, for their book commands it, but most especially over the hated Gartigraccians. Now in the Fourth Great War, the Rodain have secured the masterstroke of doom by stealing the Opstone from Castle Gartigraccus with the help of a great treason. Teetering on the brink of annihilation, Adathor, King of the Gartigraccians, must overcome the venom that caused his people to turn from the vision of their founder to the vision of the man behind the rebellion. Yet before he can pursue this, he must go away south on a desperate mission to the Three Kingdoms to gain allies-or else be swept away in the Black March of the Rodain come springtime. To aid him while he is away, two men have arrived in the city, proclaiming that the long-awaited Son of the Father has arrived and is at work in the hearts of many. The man selected as regent in Adathor's absence seeks to gainsay these two men at every turn in a war over the legitimacy of truth, calling for an absolute removal of the Father from their society so that they can be free to pursue his notion of freedom. In this late hour, can the tide be turned, or will all fall to the curse of the Rodain?
