Liberal political philosophy and natural law theory are not contradictory, but - properly understood - mutually reinforcing. Contemporary liberalism (as represented by Rawls, Guttman and Thompson, Dworkin, Raz, and Macedo) rejects natural law and seeks to diminish its historical contribution to the liberal political tradition, but it is only one, defective variant of liberalism. A careful analysis of the history of liberalism, identifying its core principles, and a similar examination of classical natural law theory (as represented by Thomas Aquinas and his intellectual descendants), show that a natural law liberalism is possible and desirable. Natural law theory embraces the key principles of liberalism, and it also provides balance in resisting some of its problematic tendencies. Natural law liberalism is the soundest basis for American public philosophy, and it is a potentially more attractive and persuasive form of liberalism for nations that have tended to resist it.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1972, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from January 15 through July 2, 1972. At the beginning of January Brother Lee traveled to San Francisco and then returned to Los Angeles. The messages that he gave in San Francisco are published at the end of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1971, volume 4. From the end of January until the end of March 1972, Brother Lee was in the Far East. During that period he visited Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan, as well as Manila, Philippines; Singapore; Jakarta, Indonesia; Bangkok, Thailand; Hong Kong; and Tokyo, Japan. There is no record of his speaking in any city except Taipei. He returned to Los Angeles at the end of March. With the exception of a brief visit to San Francisco near the end of May, he remained in Los Angeles until the beginning of June. He traveled again in North America for the next five or six weeks, visiting Houston, Texas; Toronto, Canada; Akron, Ohio; and Chicago, Illinois, before returning to Los Angeles. The messages given in Chicago are included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1972, volume 3. The contents of this volume are divided into ten sections, as follows: 1. Two messages given in Los Angeles, California, on January 15. These messages are included in this volume under the title Christ as Life to Us for the Reality and Practicality of the Church. 2. Four messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, in January. The exact dates are unknown. They were previously published in a book entitled Eating the Lord. 3. Five messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, in January. The exact dates are unknown. These messages were previously published in a book entitled The Lord's Recovery of Eating. 4. Nine messages given in a young people's training in Taipei, Taiwan, on February 8 through 12. These messages were previously published in a book entitled The Four Men in the Bible. 5. Eight messages given in Los Angeles, California, on March 30 through April 2. They were previously published in a book entitled The Living and Practical Way to Enjoy Christ. 6. Sixteen messages given in Los Angeles, California, from April 18 through June 7. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Life and Building as Portrayed in the Song of Songs. 7. Two messages given in Los Angeles, California, on May 14. They are included in this volume under the title Miscellaneous Messages Given to the Church in Los Angeles. 8. Seven messages given in San Francisco, California, on May 26 through 29. These messages are included in this volume under the title Preparing for the Lord's Return. 9. Six messages given in Houston, Texas, from June 9 through 14. They are included in this volume under the title The Kingdom as the Spreading of Christ. 10. An open-minded and clear-eyed reexamination of the cultural artifacts of Franco's Spain True, false, or both? Spain's 1939-75 dictator, Francisco Franco, was a pioneer of water conservation and sustainable energy. Pedro Almodóvar is only the most recent in a line of great antiestablishment film directors who have worked continuously in Spain since the 1930s. As early as 1943, former Republicans and Nationalists were collaborating in Spain to promote the visual arts, irrespective of the artists' political views. Censorship can benefit literature. Memory is not the same thing as history. Inside Spain as well as outside, many believe-wrongly-that under Franco's fascist dictatorship, nothing truthful or imaginatively worthwhile could be said or written or shown. In his groundbreaking new book, Franco's Crypt: Spanish Culture and Memory Since 1936, Jeremy Treglown argues that oversimplifications like these of a complicated, ambiguous actuality have contributed to a separate falsehood: that there was and continues to be a national pact to forget the evils for which Franco's side (and, according to this version, his side alone) was responsible. The myth that truthfulness was impossible inside Franco's Spain may explain why foreign narratives (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Homage to Catalonia) have seemed more credible than Spanish ones. Yet La Guerra de España was, as its Spanish name asserts, Spain's own war, and in recent years the country has begun to make a more public attempt to "reclaim" its modern history of fascism. How it is doing so, and the role played in the process by notions of historical memory, are among the subjects of this wide-ranging and challenging book.
