This is a detailed eye-witness account of the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign from the perspective of the Turks, through the eyes of Major Erich Prigge an adjutant to Marshal Liman von Sanders, the German commander-in-chief of the Ottoman forces in the Dardanelles. The focus is overwhelmingly on combat but includes related matters such as reconnaissance and logistics. Packed with specific information and technical detail as well as action, it should be of great interest to historians and enthusiasts. Prigge actually wrote two accounts of the campaign. The first, published in January 1916 while the fighting continued, revealed so much information that the Ottoman government asked the German authorities to suppress it. The other, published later that year, included coverage of the British evacuation. Although Prigge had removed many of the sensitive details of unit names, casualties etc., he had substantially rewritten and augmented many passages with lively descriptive material. Philip Rance here presents the first English translations of both versions, which together form one of the most complete and valuable accounts of this campaign available from the Turkish perspective.

"The Dardanelles" by Norman Wilkinson is a book that illustrates war in colored paintings and water-color drawings. The author well-describes the battles and conditions in the trenches as well. Norman Wilkinson CBE RI (1878 – 1971) was a British artist who usually worked in oils, watercolors, and drypoint. He was primarily a marine painter, but also an illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camouflage. Wilkinson invented dazzle painting to protect merchant shipping during the First World War. Excerpt: "THE LANDING AT SUVLA BAY, AUGUST 6-7 The strictest secrecy was maintained with regard to the new landing in Gallipoli, thus preventing anything but the vaguest rumours leaking out as to the point chosen for disembarkation. It was presumed that the Turks must have taken every possible protective measure to guard against surprise. I was very fortunate in being attached to the ship which the Admiral conducting operations had chosen as his temporary flagship. It is difficult to give any idea of the strange feelings that possessed us as we crept through the darkness on the night of August 6, knowing that big events loomed ahead. This WWI history examines the Ottoman Army’s defense of the Dardanelle Strait during Winston Churchill’s failed Gallipoli Campaign. The Dardanelles Strait, separating Europe and Asia Minor, was fortified in the fifteenth century with massive bronze bombards causing any unwelcome ships to run a truly formidable gauntlet. And indeed it was on March 18th, 1915, when a powerful fleet of British and French warships attempted to clear the Strait. The attack failed at the cost of three ships sunk and three more seriously damaged. The Allied failure to take control the Strait led to its disastrous invasion of Gallipoli. Using maps, photographs, and other illustrations, this in-depth study examines the strengths of the Turkish defenses, including the Ottoman Army’s reliance on German Krupp guns. Historian Michael Forrest also assesses the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Royal and French Navies, as well as the flaws of Winston Churchill's strategy. Damningly, Forrest's research proves that British intelligence sources had previously assessed that a naval attack alone would not succeed. Many of the fortifications on the Gallipoli peninsula and the Asian shore are still accessible. This volume helpfully identifies those that can be visited, many of which still have wrecked guns emplaced.
