Das Konzept der CSR, welches die Produktion umweltverträglicher Produkte, die Unterstützung gemeinnützlicher Zwecke, der Umwelt, der eigenen Mitarbeiter und großzügige Spenden verinnerlicht, hat während der letzten zwanzig Jahre nicht nur in der Praxis, sondern auch in der Forschung, erheblich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Viele Unternehmen erkennen heutzutage diesen Trend und binden soziale Verantwortung in ihr Unternehmensimage pro-aktiv ein oder setzen CSR strategisch zur Verbesserung ihres Images ein. CSR ist heutzutage für Unternehmen unabdingbar, um am Markt erfolgreich zu bleiben. Es wird jedoch nicht nur betrieben, um uneigennützig Gutes zu tun, sondern auch um das Unternehmen in den Augen diverser Stakeholder gut aussehen zu lassen und schließlich positive finanzielle Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Doch CSR führt trotz einer Erwartung dessen, nicht automatisch zu Vorteilen für Unternehmen, die darin investieren. Das Ziel dieser Bachelorarbeit ist es daher, Klarheit darüber zu verschaffen, unter welchen Umständen aus den guten Vorsätzen von Unternehmen beim Engagement in CSR-Aktivitäten negative Konsequenzen entstehen können. Diese Thematik wurde bisher in der Forschung wenig berücksichtigt.

More recent incidents and scandals such as Sweatshops by different sports equipment and electronic devices producers and finally the financial crisis which made the headlines among many others, which did not make it to the front page, have forced companies to consider CSR way more than in the past. But also other issues such as climate change and global warming, human rights situation and terrorism affect how companies conduct their strategies and operational practices today. Almost every large corporation in the western world makes some effort to communicate how it is committed to social issues that lie beyond its basic profit objectives – even in controversial industries such as the tobacco and petroleum industry. The industries claim to produce healthier food more fuel-efficient vehicles, conserve energy and other resources in their operations to make the world a better place. CSR often begins to be wishful thinking to hide the true face of a business. Doubtless what has come to be called responsibility of companies for ecological and social issues besides economic issues is now a sales and branding instrument for many companies. Hence, numerous other companies, also small and medium sized companies are currently asking themselves the questions: Shall we also invest in CSR initiatives? Why should we do that – just to do something? Is this still an instrument to gain a competitive advantage? Especially the last question implies the question, if consumers still believe in the basic idea of CSR initiatives, or with the overload of CSR initiatives, if they even show reactance and mistrust against such issues.

Although corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become increasingly important to a company's success, the relationship between CSR and corporate financial performance is equivocal. The purpose of this research is to explore additional conditions under which CSR can lead to negative outcomes for both the firm and consumers. Specifically, different from other papers examining the negative effects of CSR that focus on either perceived negative motivations or perceived unethical behavior by the firm, this research examines how CSR that is, on the surface, perceived positively by consumers, leads to negative outcomes. The first paper, "Who's working in the kitchen today", explores the potential for CSR activities to lead to negative financial outcomes through producer contagion between stigmatized populations and products they produce. The results show that although consumers admire companies that hire stigmatized populations, they actually tend to avoid products produced by stigmatized populations. Consumers believe that this CSR practice decreases the value of products because stigmatized populations may contaminate the products by transferring their negative properties to the products through the production process. Further research identifies the mediating effect of disgust and the moderating effects of product intimacy and end user vulnerability. Finally, a choice task reveals that the negative producer contagion effect can be mitigated by implicit information such as color. The second paper, "Can 'Real' Men Consume Ethically?" complements the first paper by examining the outcomes from the consumers' perspective. This paper examines how observers make judgments about consumers on the basis of their CSR support. Across four experiments it reveals that, in addition to being viewed as socially responsible, consumers are viewed as less masculine and more feminine when they consume ethical products. It also identifies two boundary conditions to this effect, including the use of self-benefit advertising appeals and the use of descriptive norms to signal gender appropriate behavior. It also identifies how consumers resolve the conflict of prosocial and gender-congruent impression management objectives. It shows that when consumers are in the presence of observers of the opposite sex, they are more likely to prioritize prosocial identity even when it threatens their gender orientation.
