As conveyed through the title, the characters in the novel suffer a similar fate to that of 'debris', a concept meant to evoke the images of the physical debris left over from the destruction caused by the recently ended Vietnam War. In this case however, the 'debris' is intangible and largely internal, found in the historical setting of the book, in society, in the characters' families, and even the psychological and emotional 'debris' of each individual person. The novel is a story not unique to Vietnam, but is one that applies to any morden day post-war period. Writers' Association Publishing House I finished Debris of Debris today. What a marvelous novel! The inter-related stories that make up the novel are fascinating and often charming. Your variety of characters and their stories give a poignant and comprehensive portrait of, as you write in your acknowledgements, “the lost generation of young Vietnamese intellectuals.” Reading their lives saddened me once again, and in a very personalized way–because I could connect to them–that once we had tried to kill each other, and too often succeeded. In short, I was both enlightened and moved by the book. I’m very impressed also that you wrote it in English. Wayne Karlin – American veteran writer - Letter to the author At the moment, Vietnamese literature is lacking such a selection for English-speaking audiences. In this sense, Vinh Quyen’s Debris of Debris is firmly planted at the center of a cultural crossroads. Zac Herman - Youth Weekly

Since the beginning of space flight, the collision hazard in Earth orbit has increased as the number of artificial objects orbiting the Earth has grown. Spacecraft performing communications, navigation, scientific, and other missions now share Earth orbit with spent rocket bodies, nonfunctional spacecraft, fragments from spacecraft breakups, and other debris created as a byproduct of space operations. Orbital Debris examines the methods we can use to characterize orbital debris, estimates the magnitude of the debris population, and assesses the hazard that this population poses to spacecraft. Potential methods to protect spacecraft are explored. The report also takes a close look at the projected future growth in the debris population and evaluates approaches to reducing that growth. Orbital Debris offers clear recommendations for targeted research on the debris population, for methods to improve the protection of spacecraft, on methods to reduce the creation of debris in the future, and much more.

For many liberal commentators at the turn of the 1990s, the collapse of the Soviet Union represented a final victory for Western reason and capitalist democracy. But, in recent years, liberal norms and institutions associated with the post-Cold War moment have been challenged by a visceral and affective politics. Electorates have increasingly opted for a closing inwards of the nation-state, not just in the democratic heartlands of Europe and North America, but also on the periphery of the world economy. As the popular appeal of the 'open society' is thrown into question, it is necessary to revisit assumptions about the permanence of its enabling political and ethical projects. Previously promoted by the US and its allies as a necessary complement to liberal capitalist culture and the globalization of markets, humanitarian multilateralism seems to have lost strategic currency. In this collection of essays, public intellectuals, scholars, journalists and aid workers reflect on the relationship between humanitarianism and 'liberal order'. What role has humanitarianism played in processes of liberal ordering? Amidst challenges to liberal order, what are the implications for the political economy of humanitarianism, and for the practices of humanitarian agencies?

Marine debris is a global pollution problem affecting marine life, maritime commerce and environmental quality. Scientists, policymakers and the public must be knowledgeable about the source, impact and control efforts if effective solutions are to be developed. Marine Debris addresses the origin of persistent solid waste in the ocean, from urban and rural discharges to waste from ships and the recreational use of oceans. The book identifies key issues from biological, technological, economic and legal perspectives, and gives a framework for controlling each of the main sources of marine debris.

The book analyzes the various legal and political concepts to resolve the problem of the existing space debris in outer space and which measures have been taken to avoid space debris or to reduce potential space debris in the course of future space missions. From a scientific and technical point of view various studies are ongoing to analyze the feasibility of active debris removal. Nevertheless it has to be highlighted that outer space is an international area where various actors with different legal and political concepts are operating, a situation that leads to different approaches concerning such activities.

The mounting problem of space debris in low earth orbit and its threat to the operation of application satellites has been increasingly recognized as space activities increase. The efforts of the Inter Agency Space Debris Coordinating Committee (IADC) and UN COPUS have now led to international guidelines to mitigate the creation of new debris. This book discusses the technical studies being developed for active removal processes and otherwise mitigating problems of space debris, particularly in low earth orbit. This book also considers threats to space systems and the Earth that comes from natural causes such as asteroids, coronal mass ejections, and radiation. After more than half a century of space applications and explorations, the time has come to consider ways to provide sustainability for long-term space activities.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 653: Effects of Debris on Bridge Pier Scour explores guidelines to help estimate the quantity of accumulated, flow event debris, based on the density and type of woody vegetation and river bank condition upstream and analytical procedures to quantify the effects of resulting debris-induced scour on bridge piers. The debris photographic archive, the survey questionnaire and list of respondents, and the report on the field pilot study related to development of NCHRP 653 was published as NCHRP Web-Only Document 148: Debris Photographic Archive and Supplemental Materials for NCHRP Report 653.

When the first sputnik was launched and the space era began, few gave thought to the possible negative impact of putting satellites into orbit. In fact, man's space activity has led to the formation of a new media named "space debris," i.e. man-made objects and their fragments launched into space, currently inactive and no longer serving any useful purpose. Space Debris: Hazard Evaluation and Mitigation will appeal to readers unfamiliar with the issues, as well as experts and designers. It introduces concepts behind the problems of space ecology. The volume features actual data on the space debris environment; new mathematical models for space debris evolution, production and self-production; description of the existing software and concepts for shield design. The author also reviews methods of collision risk assessment, including the attitudes and inclinations of orbits, collision hazard evaluation and suggestions for preventative measures.
