Based on the true story of the last woman to be publicly hanged in Warwickshire, England in 1849, the novel dramatises the struggle of Mary Ball, a working-class woman trapped in a loveless marriage, to determine her life. The upheaval and the realities of life in the mid-nineteenth century English Midlands provide an absorbing background for a vivid portrayal of one woman's defiance. A direct descendant of Mary Ball, the author weaves authentic historical detail with a compelling story and convincing characterisation to create an extraordinarily thoughtful and moving novel.

The mothers of famous men survive only in their sons. This is a rule almost as invariable as a law of nature. Whatever the aspirations and energies of the mother, memorable achievement is not for her. No memoir has been written in this country of the women who bore, fostered, and trained our great men. What do we know of the mother of Daniel Webster, or John Adams, or Patrick Henry, or Andrew Jackson, or of the mothers of our Revolutionary generals? This book is dedicated to Mary Ball Washington, the second wife of Augustine Washington, a planter in Virginia and the mother of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Neo Victorian Madness written by Sarah E. Maier and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Neo-Victorian Madness: Rediagnosing Nineteenth-Century Mental Illness in Literature and Other Media investigates contemporary fiction, cinema and television shows set in the Victorian period that depict mad murderers, lunatic doctors, social dis/ease and madhouses as if many Victorians were “mad.” Such portraits demand a “rediagnosing” of mental illness that was often reduced to only female hysteria or a general malaise in nineteenth-century renditions. This collection of essays explores questions of neo-Victorian representations of moral insanity, mental illness, disturbed psyches or non-normative imaginings as well as considers the important issues of legal righteousness, social responsibility or methods of restraint and corrupt incarcerations. The chapters investigate the self-conscious re-visions, legacies and lessons of nineteenth-century discourses of madness and/or those persons presumed mad rediagnosed by present-day (neo-Victorian) representations informed by post-nineteenth-century psychological insights.
