An incisive history of the changing relationship between democracy and capitalism The twentieth century witnessed the triumph of democratic capitalism in the industrialized West, with widespread popular support for both free markets and representative elections. Today, that political consensus appears to be breaking down, disrupted by polarization and income inequality, widespread dissatisfaction with democratic institutions, and insurgent populism. Tracing the history of democratic capitalism over the past two centuries, Carles Boix explains how we got here—and where we could be headed. Boix looks at three defining stages of capitalism, each originating in a distinct time and place with its unique political challenges, structure of production and employment, and relationship with democracy. He begins in nineteenth-century Manchester, where factory owners employed unskilled laborers at low wages, generating rampant inequality and a restrictive electoral franchise. He then moves to Detroit in the early 1900s, where the invention of the modern assembly line shifted labor demand to skilled blue-collar workers. Boix shows how growing wages, declining inequality, and an expanding middle class enabled democratic capitalism to flourish. This short book leads the reader on a 'guided tour' of some of the great issues facing us in the 21st century, and differing views of the best way to adapt to them. Issues relating to global warming climate change and how to respond//issues relating to the environmental limits to growth and how to respond/displacement of workers by automation and how what to do/the high and rising debt ratios of governments and whether to tax the rich the same as everybody else/ differing views on the role of and need for regulation/differing views on the nature and role of democratic government (whether well run or synonymous with inefficiency, corruption, and waste as the purveyors of Reaganomics are still pushing on us 30 years onwards. Pride of place among these issues must probably be given to the issue of how best to manage (i.e. slow down) climate change. This book puts forward two original approaches for dealing with the problem, which mightt be considerably cheaper and more easy to apply than a full scale energy transition to renewables by the whole of the economy, especially the industrial part of it. In my humble opinion, all that is required to begin the meet the challenge of climate change is that "people of good will" be prepared to make sacrifices for the benefit of the whole of society in meeting this challenge. My approach may be applied singly or in combination as follows: - Respecting the limits to growth - giving workers/employees more time off from work/more leisure time/ instead of having them produce more material goods with their inevitable by-products of greenhouse gases emissions/pollution. - Hastening the movement towards a non-polluting post industrial information and service economy - accelerating and re-inforcing existing/underlying trends in the economy away from polluting goods producing industries towards non polluting labour intensive and also skill intensive services providing. Since many services cater to/are oriented to LEISURE time activities/passtimes/pursuits (e.g. restaurants, hotels, resorts, and other attractions) this strategy may be viewed as a natural complement to the more leisure time -for-all listed above. When it comes to specific industries that produce especially greenhouse pollution intensive products would it be reasonable to expect/hope that in a case where pollution and traffic congestion become excessively burdensome on the health and quality of life, these industries sacrifice some of their growth/profit objectives for the good of the whole locality/ community/society by either re-locating or by diversifying their product line into less polluting/non polluting but related products such as electric cars/and their improvements/or even moving into comparable technology intensive areas but producing not cars but renewable energy technologies and their applications/as well as clean up after ourselves technologies.

Democracy is under threat from a variety of forces originating in the transnational capitalist economy. Structural economic pressures force states to act in certain ways, regardless of what their populations want or think. In Democracy in Capitalist Times, John S. Dryzek discusses the challenges transnational capitalism presents for democracy and the most promising places where democracy can find new and growing support. Dryzek links contemporary political theory and comparative politics to explore the contradictions between capitalism and democracy. While ideological forces limit the range of political debate, government and market together promote aggressive individualism, under which people compete as consumers and profit maximizers rather than associate as citizens. Dryzek outlines these forces, considers how democracy might be defended against them, and explores the prospects for deepening democracy in the face of these threats. He argues that while state democracy has significantly diminished, democracy in different places, notably civil society, social movements, workplaces, and transnational politics, is on the rise, and it is in these places that democrats should concentrate their efforts. Dryzek further explains that the health of democratic politics in these alternative locations crucially depends on how states organize patterns of interest representation, among which social democratic corporatism proves to be most conducive to democracy.

This book looks at the emergence of capitalism and democracy as systems of economic and political governance and considers how these two systems may be both mutually supportive and antagonistic. In mapping out the balance between capitalism and democracy, the book includes chapters on the theory and history of these systems that challenge the assumption that their spread will bring about a convergence of incomes either among countries or within them. Inequalities of income and power emerge as a major societal issue alongside poverty, and the book develops alternative societal models based upon the degree of inequality in wealth and power. Since 1980, Anglo-American style capitalism has been a cause of increased inequality in a number of rich countries and threatens to duplicate itself in many developing countries. The book argues that the increasing integration of markets (globalization) will not solve these problems of inequality, they require political solutions. The EU attempts one such solution, but it is not clear whether it will remain competitively viable. Meanwhile, increasing inequality is causing two serious problems for democratic societies: a move to the left and/or political instability in many developing countries and a rising tide of immigrants seeking to move from poor countries to rich.
