Excerpt from The Dental Times, 1865, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science I refuse to operate in all cases where the will of my patient is to interfere with my freedom in cutting away dead portions Of enamel, as much as may be necessary to secure firm healthy borders, and to make enduring fillings. I am, perhaps, more lavish in the use of my cutting instruments than many eminent Operators, but the result of more than one hundred thousand fillings sustains and justifies my practice. The fears that the plugs will be seen must be dismissed by the patient, and disregarded by the opera tor, if the safety Of the tooth is the end sought. In the incisors, especially, is firmness in this matter required, and young Operators are Often found yielding to the prejudices of the wrong directed judgment of their unin formed patrons; and it is only in after years, when the teeth are hope lessly crumbled away, that both learn their mistake. Excerpt from The Dental Times, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science; July, 1869 It is very often the case that the patient will not return to have the permanent gold filling put in for three or four months, but in such cases I generally find the temporary filling in good condition and preserving the tooth; in fact, I think I would always prefer leaving the temporary filling in at least three months if I were sure it would preserve the tooth in all cases. My experience with this mode of treating exposed nerves, now for over two years, has been more successful than I imagined at first it could be, and I have no hesitancy in stating that, out of every ten healthy teeth filled in this manner, for comparatively healthy persons, nine of them have proved successful, and the Operation attended with but little or no pain, or at least no more than would follow an application to destroy the nerve. My faith has become so strong that I now cap in this way in almost every instance, rarely ever making use of nerve paste. I have several patients in the village whom I have treated teeth for in this manner, and have an opportunity to see them Often, therefore I know some Of my operations have been successful. I might mention, too, that I consider os artificial one of the best remedies for sensitive dentine. I saturate cotton in a thin mixture of it, and place it in the tooth, and let it remain two or three days; the cotton becomes hard, and serves as a temporary filling. From the Introduction: The second volume of this collection follows Clemens from his first days as a resident journalist in California, late in May 1864, through the end of his first full year as a California resident, 1865. In this twenty-month period he wrote most of his work for the San Francisco Golden Era, the Morning Call, the Dramatic Chronicle, and the Californian. He began to publish somewhat more regularly in eastern journals, like the New York Saturday Press and the Weekly Review, and toward the end of the period he started a long assignment as the daily correspondent from San Francisco to the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In November 1865 he published "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" [no. 119] and by the beginning of 1866 the news of its success with eastern readers had begun to filter back to California. He was on the verge of national and international fame as a humorist.
