Relational aggression is the use of ostracism, manipulation of social relationships, rumors, and gossip with the intent to injure or manipulate a relationship (Young, Boye, & Nelson, 2006). Relational aggression (RA) and bullying have become problematic for many schools (National Association of School Psychologist, 2010). The National Education Association website reports that six out of ten American teenagers witness bullying in school at least once a day. Additionally, 86% of girls report experiencing harassment in school. Victims of relational aggression experience depression, loneliness, anxiety, peer rejection, and school avoidance (Card & Hodges, 2008; Crick, Casas, & Nelson, 2002; Yoon, Barton, & Taiariol, 2004). This dissertation explores the literature concerning relational aggression in the context of gender, developmental stage, social networks, popularity, and gender socialization. The purpose of this dissertation is to design and develop a program to help prevent relational aggression and assist girls already dealing with relational aggression. The program is designed for a target population of sixth grade female students in a public suburban elementary school. The program is based on a needs assessment conducted in the elementary school. The needs of the target population in the Socialization Domain were assessed with both a self-report and a peer nomination tool. The needs assessment revealed that 72% of the girls in the sixth grade class were nominated by their peers as being relationally aggressive. Additionally, girls who were nominated as being relationally aggressive also reported being victimized by relationally aggressive peers. The program consists of 12 lunchtime sessions that focus on awareness and identification of relational aggression and enhancing social and emotional learning skills such as assertiveness, effective communication, and social problem solving. This dissertation includes lesson plans and handouts. Finally, limitations and implications for school psychology are discussed.

Aggression, in all of its forms, is a growing problem in today's schools. Relational aggression, the attempt to harm another person through manipulation and damage of relationships with others, is a specific form of aggression that is not only increasingly prevalent, but also undertreated (Crick & Gropeter, 1995). Children gossip about peers, exclude each other from activities, and engage in name-calling, among other relationally aggressive behaviors. Females are more likely to engage in this behavior; males tend to engage in more physically aggressive behaviors (Yoon, Barton, & Taiariol, 2004). While frequently dismissed by teachers and administrators as "typical" childhood behavior, studies have shown that relational aggression can be as harmful as physical aggression (Bauman & Del Rio, 2006; Yoon et al., 2004). The purpose of this dissertation is to design and develop a classroom program for a central New Jersey public school to be implemented with third to fifth grade female students during lunch, an unstructured time of day during which children often engage in relational aggression with peers. The program is based on a thorough needs assessment conducted in the middle school for which the program is being designed (Maher, 2000). The program design also relies on Dodge's (1986) Information Processing Model as a foundation for its design (Lochman & Dunn, 1993). The needs assessment examined students' peer relationships and students' bullying behaviors through student and teacher questionnaires. The program consists of ten classroom-based lessons that address bullying, relationship skills, anger management, and problem solving. The other part of the program is a teambuilding component for implementation during lunch and recess. The dissertation includes detailed lesson plans as well as session outlines for teambuilding activities. Also included are introductory lessons, which provide school personnel with a clear lesson for introducing each component of the program to students. Finally, the limitations of the program, implications for the program's use, and future directions are also discussed.

The Girlfriends' Club was a five week study that examined the effects an intervention program had on relational aggression in sixth grade girls at an elementary school in San Diego County. A curriculum was developed to teach girls how to understand friendships, break down stereotypes, and accept differences. Over half of the sixth grade girls participated in the club and completed activities, which included joumaling, creating crafts, and role playing. Data included informal observations and survey results. The researchers perceived a positive change in the participants and final surveys revealed 78% of participants felt more prepared to deal with relational aggression. Relational aggression is the name-calling, gossiping, and exclusion used by girls to manipulate relationships. This study examines the need for relational aggression intervention for intermediate elementary school girls. Often known as "the mean things girls do to each other", relational aggression is a serious concern in elementary, middle, and high school. Until recently, very little research was done on this topic due to the nature of relational aggression; it is covert, quiet and occurs under the radar of teachers, parents, and school staff. However, the effects of this type of aggression can be devastating to a young girl and can lead to tragic consequences for the victim. The research utilized qualitative inquiry to determine what methods of intervention are being used and how successful they are. Conversational interviews with teachers and key staff, as well as a brief questionnaire, were used to examine the stategies being used and to generate ideas for further methods of intervention. In addition to the interviews, research strategies included review of written documents and intervention programs in use around the country, and informal conversations with girls in elementary school. The data indicate that there is a need for intervention and that teachers are ready to tackle relational aggression in their classrooms and schools. Identification of the problem, awareness of the effects, and access to appropriate methods of intervention are key elements in reducing relational aggression in elementary schools. Developing a comprehensive resource guide was the primary focus of this study. Included in the guide is a working definition of the term 'relational aggression', overviews of the current programs in place to address relational aggression, ideas for promoting awareness in schools, bibliography for teachers, parents and students, and a call for further action.

A graduate student created and implemented a classroom guidance activity with middle school students on the topic of relational aggression. The purpose of this activity was to promote awareness on the prevalence of relational aggression and measure the sample student's participation in relationally aggressive behaviors. A twenty item pre and postsurvey on aggression was given to a sample of 75 students at a Western New York middle school. The sample included 41 females and 34 males, ranging in age from 12-14. The sample included students from Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, and Asian racial backgrounds. Also included is a review of the current literature on relationally aggressive behaviors, differences in boys and girls in respect to relational aggression, the importance of relationships, cliques and popularity, the impact of aggression, and rationale for school based awareness and intervention. The project demonstrated that most students reported relationally aggressive behaviors before the classroom guidance activity was presented. There was an approximate 7% decrease in relationally aggressive behaviors on 17 of the survey items. Three of the survey items showed a 6% increase in reported behavior after the guidance activity. The project demonstrated that relational aggression occurs among boys and girls, and that it occurs across different racial groups. It also demonstrated that relational aggression is an important issue among middle school students. Implications for school based awareness, prevention, and intervention are necessary to combat relational aggression are also presented.
