"Graphs can be used to convey information about relationships in many applications. State transition diagrams, PERT/CPM charts, and entity-relationship diagrams are a few examples of many applications involving graphs. Typically, nodes in the graph represent items in the application and the edges represent the relationships among these items. A graph editor is an interactive tool that presents a graph to the user pictorially and allows the user to edit the graph. This monograph presents the design of an extendible graph editor, which is a graph editor that can be adapted easily to many different application areas. Several fundamental and recurring problem areas associated with graph editors are investigated and a solution is proposed for each. The topics investigated are: - Graph layout: a layout constraint mechanism is presented which can easily be combined with various graph layout algorithms. - Graphical abstraction: a novel clustering techniquecalled edge concentration is presented which can reduce the apparent complexity of the graph. - Persistence: the graph structures produced by theeditor can be kept in long-term storage using a standardized, external format for graphs. - Extendibility: the design of the proposed graph editor makes it easy to adapt to various applications. To demonstrate their feasibility, the proposed solutions have been incorporated into EDGE, an extendible graph editor protoype."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the DIMACS International Workshop on Graph Drawing, GD '94, held in Princeton, New Jersey in October 1994. The 50 papers and system descriptions presented address the problem of constructing geometric representations of abstract graphs, networks and hypergraphs, with applications to key technologies such as software engineering, databases, visual interfaces, and circuit layout; they are organized in sections on three-dimensional drawings, orthogonal drawings, planar drawings, crossings, applications and systems, geometry, system demonstrations, upward drawings, proximity drawings, declarative and other approaches; in addition reports on a graph drawing contest and a poster gallery are included.

The combination of fast, low-latency networks and high-performance, distributed tools for mathematical software has resulted in widespread, affordable scientific computing facilities. Practitioners working in the fields of computer communication networks, distributed computing, computational algebra and numerical analysis have been brought together to contribute to this volume and explore the emerging distributed and parallel technology in a scientific environment. This collection includes surveys and original research on both software infrastructure for parallel applications and hardware and architecture infrastructure. Among the topics covered are switch-based high-speed networks, ATM over local and wide area networks, network performance, application support, finite element methods, eigenvalue problems, invariant subspace decomposition, QR factorization and Todd-Coxseter coset enumeration.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Graph Drawing, GD 2001, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2001. The 32 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 66 paper submissions. Also included are a corrected version of a paper from the predecessor volume, short reports on the software systems exhibition, two papers of the special session on graph exchange formats, and a report on the annual graph drawing contests. The papers are organized in topical sections on hierarchical drawing, planarity, crossing theory, compaction, planar graphs, symmetries, interactive drawing, representations, aesthetics, 2D- and 3D-embeddings, data visualization, floor planning, and planar drawing.

Graph drawing comprises all aspects of visualizing structural relations between objects. The range of topics dealt with extends from graph theory, graph algorithms, geometry, and topology to visual languages, visual perception, and information visualization, and to computer-human interaction and graphics design. This monograph gives a systematic overview of graph drawing and introduces the reader gently to the state of the art in the area. The presentation concentrates on algorithmic aspects, with an emphasis on interesting visualization problems with elegant solutions. Much attention is paid to a uniform style of writing and presentation, consistent terminology, and complementary coverage of the relevant issues throughout the 10 chapters. This tutorial is ideally suited as an introduction for newcomers to graph drawing. Ambitioned practitioners and researchers active in the area will find it a valuable source of reference and information.

This volume contains the proceedings of RTA-93, the fifth International Conference on Rewriting Techniques and Applications, held in Montreal, Canada, in June 1993. The volume includes three invited lectures, "Rewrite techniques in theorem proving" (L. Bachmair), "Proving properties of typed lambda terms: realizability, covers, and sheaves" (J. Gallier), and "On some algorithmic problems for groups and monoids" (S.J. Adian), together with 29 selected papers, 6 system descriptions, and a list of open problems in the field. The papers covermany topics: term rewriting; termination; graph rewriting; constraint solving; semantic unification, disunification and combination; higher-order logics; and theorem proving, with several papers on distributed theorem proving, theorem proving with constraints and completion.

Atherosclerosis, the most common disease in humans and also the main cause of death in the Western world, only develops after an intima is formed. The intima is defined as the region of the arterial wall from the endothelial surface to the luminal margin of the media. This volume considers all aspects of intima formation based on results which had been obtained by studying three different models: - Spontaneous intima formation; - Experimentally induced intima formation; - Latrogeneously induced intima formation.
