This imaginative book offers architecture students over a hundred examples of visual problem solving in architectural design. Photographs of actual buildings, paired with digitally manipulated images in 'before and after' comparisons, demonstrate the sorts of real-life situations that architectural design courses rarely teach students how to address, and show how designers can manipulate form and material to achieve desired effects: emphasizing or diminishing building elements, imposing visual order on a façade, or adding grace notes.

This study investigated and compared gaze patterns of typical viewers and trained designers to learn if there are differences in the gaze patterns between the two groups. Using eye tracking technology, participants were asked to interpret orally and in writing the effectiveness of the compositions of several advertisements and a company letterhead. The research data included the recorded gaze patterns of participants and the oral and written remarks of the viewers. The questions asked the participants to assess their responses to and appreciation of the compositions. This study shows that similar elements of design are of importance to experts and novices alike, but that experts viewed the art differently than novices.

I Heart Design is a collection of “favorite” designs as selected by 80 prominent graphic designers, typographers, teachers, scholars, writers and design impresarios. Designers have preferences, like modern over postmodern, serif over sans serif, decorative over minimal, but designers could not be engaged in design practice if they did not love design. The reasons for such a charged emotion varies from individual to individual, but there are certain commonalities regarding form, function, outcome, and more. Design triggers something in all of us that may be solely aesthetic or decidedly content-driven, but in the final analysis, we are drawn to it through the heart. Designs featured include the iconic CBS eye, the stark Kodak identity, the Coca-Cola bottle, and, of course, The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album cover.

A sumptuous presentation of impeccably designed classic interiors by Matthew Patrick Smyth. Matthew Patrick Smyth is renowned for elegant, sophisticated rooms that combine sumptuous fabrics, well-selected antiques, and contemporary comfort. In Through a Designer's Eye, he reveals his design process, emphasizing his commitment to exploring the world, through travel and in the imagination of the theater, and to recording scenes and vignettes in photographs. Through a Designer's Eye presents Smyth's recent work ranging from a traditional Park Avenue apartment and an edgy Tribeca loft in Manhattan to waterfront houses in Florida, New England, and Long Island that demonstrate his skills in responding to context and eliciting preferences of clients to create a unique environment for each. Nowhere is this better seen than in his own house in Salisbury, Connecticut, an unexpected 1970s prefabricated deck house now elegantly appointed with an eclectic mix of furniture, objects, and works of art he and his partner have collected over many years. Smyth's engaging, first-person narrative references formative experiences with theater and photography and focuses on five elements of interior design--appreciating of artisanal and handcrafted elements, understanding of history and context, evaluating light and seasonal change, weaving furnishings and art into a coherent mise-en-scene, creating an inviting atmosphere--that contribute to successful spaces. Illustrating the text are lush photographs of completed rooms, interspersed with Smyth's own vignettes and details, which add a unique visual layer to the presentation.
