(Uncorrected OCR) Social Skills Training for Patients with Schizophrenia: A Local Study of Program Development and Evaluation ABSTRACT The major purpose of the present study was to develop and evaluate a social skills training program for patients with schizophrenia in Hong Kong. To investigate whether the social skills training equipped patients with a spectrum of social skills, improved their symptomatic status, enhanced their self-efficacy, and ameliorated their perceived social difficulty, a local social skills training program was designed. The formulation of the program was guided by the information-processing model (Wallace et aL 1980) and was based on the needs of the patients with schizophrenia in the local contexL. Thirteen and six patients of a day hospital were recruited in the study as experimental and control group participants respectively. After receiving ten sessions of social skills training focusing on basic conversation skills, problem-solving skills, and friendship-building skills, significant improvements were found in patients' receiving and processing skills, assertiveness, and self-efficacy. The hypotheses of the improvement of sending skills and social difficulty were also partially supported. No significantly discernible difference between the patients' pre- and post-training symptomatic status was found. Further, quantitative and qualitative vi comments were collected from the patients, the trainers and the assessors to facilitate the development of future social skills training programs. While the patients generally found the traming helpful to them, and the trainers opined that the training was on the whole effective and relevant, the assessors gave valuable comments regarding shortcomings of the present assessment strategy of sending skills. Finally, limitations and future research directions were discussed.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Story-Based Social Skills Training Program on the social skill development of 5-6 year-old children. In the study, the pre-test/post-test and retention test experimental design with a control group was used. 5-6 year-old 60 (30 experimental, 30 control) preschool children participated in the study. Story-Based Social Skills Training Program was administered to the children in the experimental group twice a week for 5 weeks. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a schoolwide social skills training program. Two groups of elementary school children (twenty-six new transfer-in students and thirty-two students who had been in the program for two years, n = 58) were administered questionnaires at pre and at six months post to see if there were changes in social skill ratings and behaviour ratings. Students aged 8 to 1 2 were randomly selected from Grades 3 to 6 classrooms to participate in this study. Separate versions of the Social Skills Rating Scale were administered to both teachers and children. It was expected that all students would improve in their social skills and problem behavior scores. In addition, it was hypothesized that new students would show a greater improvement in both social skills and problem behavior scores than the two year group. Results indicated that neither social skills or problem behaviours improved. In addition, students new to the school were not significantly different from students who had participated in the program for more than two years. However, there were significant findings in relation to age.

Originally published in 1984, one of the few facts that emerged clearly in the beleaguered field of psychology and mental health at the time was the extent of poor social skills in psychiatric patients, the mentally handicapped and problem adolescents. As a result, during the 1970s, social skills training – espoused as a form of behaviour therapy – seemed to offer great promise, based on the notion that social skills, like any other skills, are learnt and can be taught if lacking. However, in evaluating social skills training, many investigators found that skills did not endure and generalise. This book attempts a major re-assessment of social skills training. It examines the underlying paradigms, which are shown to be fundamentally behaviourist. Such paradigms, it is argued, severely constrain the aims and method of current types of training. Thus the book develops what is termed an ‘agency’ approach, based on man as a social agent who actively constructs his own experiences and generates his own goal-directed behaviour on the basis of those constructs. This new model is developed in both theoretical and practical ways in the main body of the book and should, even today, be of great interest to all those involved with social skills training.

Given the critical degree to which a person's level of social competence influences one's academic, mental, social, and interpersonal success, it is imperative that schools facilitate the learning of social skills. The purpose of this study was to design, implement and evaluate a social skills training intervention for students with mild disabilities (and behaviors that adversely affect their participation in a general curriculum or resource settings) in a rural special school setting. A review of literature guided the design and evaluation of the intervention. According to analysis of data on student behavior, the social skills training intervention did not consistently influence an increase in replacement behavior. The results of the study were consistent with prior research, best summarized by Maag (2006) who observed that the core issue of social skills training interventions "may be the feasibility of implementing and evaluating their effectiveness in public school settings" (p. 14). Conclusions from the study include recommendations for the school to improve a future social skills training intervention.
