Effort was continued to improve performance and increase the reliability of thermionic energy converters for space applications. The particular objectives include optimization of geometry and ceramic insulation between emitters and heat source. This work will include the development of a thermionic generator module to develop 3.0 volts of potential from a liquid metal heat source. The overall concept of the 3-volt generator has been established. Before final design and fabrication of the generator, the more difficult problems are being solved by fabricating and testing prototype 3-converter modules. During this period, four 3-converter modules were assembled. A number of subassemblies were successfully tested and techniques for assembling a series of converters within a single envelope were perfected. A method of bonding the center heat source tubing has been tentatively selected and materials for detailed evaluation of the method have been ordered. Life testing of one Type A1198B converter was concluded after 1010 hours. Another converter of this type has since completed 600 hours of a life test with a constant output of 46 watts. (Author).

This report describes the continuation of work accomplished under an applied research program to develop a thermionic converter module suitable for liquid metal heating. The A-1198B converter, designed for operation in a liquid metal loop, was operated for more than 2400 hours during life test. A technique for bonding the converter to the liquid metal tubing was developed. Design and fabrication methods perfected in the development of the A-1198B led to the production of the first multiple-unit thermionic energy module. Designated the A-1274, the module consisted of three series-connected converters in a single vacuum-tight envelope using a common cesium reservoir. Modular techniques were extended with the production of a 10-converter unit, a complex structure containing many ceramic-to-metal and metal-to-metal seals. During the program, a number of detailed evaluations of techniques and materials, including cesium compatibility studies, were also made. (Author).

Basic module design and fabrication problems have been solved by the assembly and successful testing of a 3-converter module. Operation of this module proved the principle of enclosing several series-connected converters within a single vacuum envelope. The modular approach has been further demonstrated by the fabrication and testing of a 3-volt (10-converter) module. As a result of extensive bonding studies the use of expanding steel plugs to force the center tubing into a tight bond with the emitter has been selected. Life testing of one converter was concluded after 2403.5 hours. Another converter had completed more than 100 hours of a life test by the end of the report period. (Author).
