This article, devoted to the issue of non-agricultural economic activity in rural areas, reports upon the latest statistical data, as well as material obtained by way of field study. Successive sections acquaint the reader with the contemporary functional structure of rural areas, the areas in which non-agricultural businesses are concentrated, the development of new functions in the countryside and factors favoring this development. The summary notes that Poland's period of transformation brought a dynamic development of activity of the above kind, albeit one that has not yet been able to make up for the earlier closedown of state-owned or cooperative enterprises. The greatest development of non-agricultural economic activity has been observed in city hinterland areas and has first and foremost involved the service sector and trade. In turn, the peripheral areas left more or less to their own devices have experienced slower development of business outside agriculture, in association with such unfavorable phenomena manifested therein as depopulation, unemployment, lack of investment, etc. These all contribute to deepening of the poverty existing in the aforementioned areas.

The paper aims at identifying and assessing the opinions of farmers concerning the socio-economic benefits from non-agricultural activity they conduct towards their agricultural holding, farming family and rural areas on the territory where these units operate. The empirical material for the paper was provided by surveys carried out in 2011-2012, i.e. questionnaire-based interview, among 210 farmers - owners of individual agricultural holdings - running additional non-agricultural economic activity from the area of south-eastern Poland, namely the following three voivodeships: Świętokrzyskie, Małopolskie and Podkarpackie. The classification of the surveyed farms into two groups, which was based on the conditions of the aforementioned opinions, and analysis of differences in the assessment of benefits between these groups, using the Mann-Whitney test, allowed to define the key determinants of farmers' opinions on the socio-economic significance of the non-agricultural economic activity they conduct. An important determinant was the share of income from non-agricultural economic activity of farmers in the structure of their family's sources of income. The surveys showed that, in the opinion of farmers, the higher the ratio for the share, the greater the significance of the analysed socio-economic benefits following from non-agricultural activity conducted by them.

This article is devoted to changes in the functional structure of Poland's rural areas in the years 1988-1999, that is - in the period of transition from the socialist to market economy and the country's preparations for the EU accession. As the result of functional classification of rural areas carried out in 1999, it proved possible to identify ten functional classes, which can be associated into five groups (i.e. areas with an agricultural function, with equal contribution from different functions, with prevalent forestry, with prevalent tourist/rest-and-recreation function, and with prevalent non-agricultural function). The functional classification obtained revealed that the ten-year period brought a strengthening of the agricultural function in central and eastern Poland, while the West and parts of the South witnessed an increase in the significance of functions outside agriculture. The latter were the result of the development of new economic activities, including farms engaging in the processing of agricultural products and the rendering of different kinds of services. In areas with a prevailing agricultural function, there has in general been a decline in the significance of the market- related agriculture, and an increase of its role in the self-supply for rural inhabitants.

The research was composed of two parts. In the first one, an attempt was made to determine spatial variations in the level of sustainable development of rural areas in the region of Green Lungs of Poland by means of taxonomic analysis. The level of sustainable development was presented as a meta-feature made up of three components: environmental, economic and social. The environmental component, which was the most difficult one to operationalize, was defined with the use of the typical pressure-state-response framework. The economic component was understood as characteristics of the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, economic activity characteristics, and the level of affluence (budgets) of rural communes. The social component was described by demographic structure, educational characteristics, social activity and living standards. The second part of the research project was designed to identify factors determining the current picture (level) of sustainable rural development within the region of Green Lungs of Poland. The main rationale for conducting the research, in the context of objectives and methods used in its first stage, was to verify the hypotheses proposed, select partial variables, and supplement the analysis with some important content to allow a more valid interpretation of research findings.

The main objective of the research is to evaluate the significance of gmina local government in the field of agriculture and non-agricultural activity development in rural areas. To achieve this, questionnaires were designed and rural areas inhabitants were interviewed. The interviewees were farmers and entrepreneurs of non-agricultural business activity from rural areas of south-east Poland. The survey was carried out in 2007 and was directed to a randomly selected sample of 856 farmers - owners of individual farms - and among them there were 182 farmers - entrepreneurs. The analysis concentrated on activities of local government units realized for local development, in particular those supporting agriculture and non-agricultural entrepreneurship in rural areas. On the basis of the information gathered, we also attempted to determine those activities of local government that shall be intensified or taken in order to better use local resources for the development of rural areas and agriculture itself.

The article discusses the progress of changes in the area structure of individual farms and related to this changes in the number of workers in agriculture as well as the issue of unused labor resources in Poland. The research material are public statistics data (Polish Statistical Office - GUS) and the results of own research carried out at IAFE-NRI. A detailed analysis of the decline in the share of people working in agriculture among the total number of employed in our country indicates that in the recent period the scale of decline in the value of this indicator is accelerating. These tendencies were mainly the result of a much larger than before increase in the number of non-agricultural workers, especially among rural residents.
