Finalist, 2021 Bram Stoker Awards (Superior Achievement in Non-Fiction) The first collection of essays to address Satan’s ubiquitous and popular appearances in film Lucifer and cinema have been intertwined since the origins of the medium. As humankind’s greatest antagonist and the incarnation of pure evil, the cinematic devil embodies our own culturally specific anxieties and desires, reflecting moviegoers’ collective conceptions of good and evil, right and wrong, sin and salvation. Giving the Devil His Due is the first book of its kind to examine the history and significance of Satan onscreen. This collection explores how the devil is not just one monster among many, nor is he the “prince of darkness” merely because he has repeatedly flickered across cinema screens in darkened rooms since the origins of the medium. Satan is instead a force active in our lives. Films featuring the devil, therefore, are not just flights of fancy but narratives, sometimes reinforcing, sometimes calling into question, a familiar belief system. From the inception of motion pictures in the 1890s and continuing into the twenty-first century, these essays examine what cinematic representations tell us about the art of filmmaking, the desires of the film-going public, what the cultural moments of the films reflect, and the reciprocal influence they exert. Loosely organized chronologically by film, though some chapters address more than one film, this collection studies such classic movies as Faust, Rosemary’s Baby, The Omen, Angel Heart, The Witch, and The Last Temptation of Christ, as well as the appearance of the Devil in Disney animation. Guiding the contributions to this volume is the overarching idea that cinematic representations of Satan reflect not only the hypnotic powers of cinema to explore and depict the fantastic but also shifting social anxieties and desires that concern human morality and our place in the universe. On the night of October 10, 2008, Johnny Altinger, 38 and single, was heading to his first date with a woman he had met online. Soon after, Johnny's friends received strange emails and computer messages from him, boasting of his new girlfriend and her plans to treat him to an extended tropical holiday. 'I've got a one way ticket to heaven,' he wrote, 'and I'm never coming back.' He was never seen again. Two weeks earlier, aspiring filmmaker Mark Twitchell, a young father with a devotion to the television series Dexter, began a three-day shoot for his latest short film. His horror story featured a serial killer who impersonates women on an online dating site to lure unsuspecting men to his suburban kill room. But was his script actually the blueprint for a real-life murder? And what of Twitchell's other writings, including the elaborate and shocking document titled S.K. Confessions? Was it a diary detailing his dark transformation into a would-be serial killer? Combining sharp journalistic insight, meticulous research, and a powerfully gripping narrative,The Devil's Cinemais the definitive account of the notorious 'Dexter Killer,' a case and trial that captured the world's attention. Steve Lillebuen takes us deep into the extraordinary police investigation and the lives of everyone involved, while unveiling never-before-revealed details, all drawn from extensive and exclusive interviews - including months of contact with the killer himself. Moving from the police station to the courtroom, from the surface calm of suburbia to the surreal glamour of Hollywood, The Devil's Cinemais a compelling, multi-faceted story of dangerous obsessions pushed to extremes.

Undoubtedly the most notorious title in director Ken Russell’s controversial filmography, The Devils (1973) caused a real furor on its initial theatrical release, only to largely disappear for many years. This Devil’s Advocate considers the film’s historical context, as the timing of the first appearance of The Devils is of particular importance, its authorship and adaptation (Russell’s auteur reputation aside, the screenplay is based on John Whiting’s 1961 play of the same name, which was in turn based on Aldous Huxley’s 1952 book The Devils of Loudun), and its generic hybridity. Darren Arnold goes on to examine the themes prevalent in the film—this is the only film of Russell’s which the director considered to be political—and considers the representation of gender and sexuality, gender fluidity, and how sex and religion clash to interesting and controversial effect. He concludes by revisiting the film’s censorship travails and the various versions of The Devils that have appeared on both big and small screens, and the film’s legacy and influence.

THE DEVILS: KEN RUSSELL: POCKET MOVIE GUIDE By Jeremy Mark Robinson. The Devils is a celebrated 1971 picture based on the Loudun demonology trials in the 17th century, scripted by Ken Russell from Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun (1952) and the 1961 play by John Whiting (1918-63). The Devils was undoubtedly director Russell's most notorious hour. It was the site of conflicts between the filmmakers, the American film studio (Warners), the censors and the critics. A tour-de-force of direction (and organization and production), the most significant contribution to The Devils may well be the screenplay - and Ken Russell has the screen credit for the script. Which makes The Devils all the more remarkable. (And as if writing the script and directing the movie wasn't enough, Russell also co-produced it.) It's clear from the first few minutes of The Devils that Ken Russell was on fire as a filmmaker when he made this picture (he was certainly on fire at the period in his film career - not only The Devils but also The Music Lovers and The Boy Friend were playing at the same time in central London theatres. Incredible - I can't think of another British movie-maker with three big (and very different) movies in release at the same time). Ken Russell was happy with what he'd achieved in The Devils: 'The Devils is the most successful film I've done, insofar as what I expected is there. The effects I aimed at seemed to work'. In The Devils, Russell was operating with a giant canvas, and you can see that the director is in complete control of the form, and of this movie (which gives the audience confident in the storytellers; this movie really knows what it's doing). This book about The Devils contains lengthy chapters on every aspect of director Ken Russell. A filmmaker like no other, Russell remains one of cinema's extraordinary talents, a creator of masterpieces such as The Devils, Tommy and The Music Lovers, and a body of work that flies from the pastoral, Romantic lyricism of Delius: Song of Summer and Elgar to the wild extremes of Lisztomania, Altered States and Mahler. Includes: filmographies; resources; video and DVD availability; quotes from Russell; and fans on The Devils. Fully illustrated, including many images of the movie, and Ken Russell's cinema. Bibliography and notes. ISBN 9781861715067. 244 pages. www.crmoon.com

"A detailed, well-constructed account of a diabolical real-life Dexter. Lillebuen has written a riveting, true crime page-turner about aspiring filmmaker Mark Twitchell, who turned his obsession with fantasy into horrible reality." -- Robert Remington, co-author of Runaway Devil On the night of October 10, 2008, Johnny Altinger was heading to his first date with a woman he had met online. How did a movie by one of the most famous filmmakers in the world end up banned, censored, and shelved? Made by the English Federico Fellini, Ken Russell, The Devils is so contentious that even decades after its 1971 release, Warner Brothers keeps its most incendiary scene under lock and key. Featuring an exclusive interview with recently deceased director Ken Russell and new interviews with cast, crew, and historians, Raising Hell examines this beautifully blasphemous movie about an oversexed priest and a group of sexually repressed nuns in 17th century France. From the film s inception through its headline - making production and controversial reception, Richard Crouse explores what it is about Russell s rarely seen cult classic that makes it a cinematic treasure.
