Despite intensive research, negation remains elusive. Its expression across languages, its underlying cognitive mechanisms, its development across time, and related phenomena, such as negative polarity and negative concord, leave many unresolved issues of both a definitional and a substantive nature. Such issues are at the heart of the present volume, which presents a twofold contribution. The first part offers a mix of large-scale typological surveys and in-depth investigation of the evolution of negation in individual languages and language families that have not frequently been studied from this point of view, such as Chinese, Berber, Quechua, and Austronesian languages. The second part centers on French, a language whose early stages are comparatively richly documented and which therefore provides an important test case for hypotheses about the diachrony of negative marking. Representing, moreover, a variety of theoretical approaches, the volume will be of interest to researchers on negation, language change, and typology.

This book represents the first comprehensive overview over the history of negation in German. It addresses both the development of the negation particles as well as the diachrony of indefinites in the scope of negation and the phenomenon of Negative Concord. Being based on a corpus study of several Old and Middle High German texts, it comprises a wealth of historical examples with additional comparison to Modern Standard German and dialects, as well as crosslinguistic data from a variety of languages. The findings are placed in the context of typological research and are analysed in terms of current syntactic and semantic theory of negation arguing for an unchanged underlying syntactic structure, with changes in the lexical filling of NegP and in the lexical features of indefinites resulting in crucial changes in the syntactic patterns of negation. This book is of interest to scholars of German linguistics, historical linguists, as well as anyone working in the field of negation.

The French language has a negation pattern unlike most other Romance languages, using both a pre-verbal and post-verbal negation marker. In addition, the post-verbal marker most commonly used in Modern French, pas, was not the only one used over the centuries, nor did the word pas originally have any negative meaning. This dissertation is an investigation of the process of grammaticalization by which pas became part of the standard negation structure using three sources of data. First, a diachronic analysis is done of various historical French dictionaries to see how the perception of different negation structures changed over time. This allows us to see how pas developed along the continuum of grammaticalization and to identify the timeframes in which other negation structures were considered archaic. The second method done is an analysis of corpus data of Medieval French. This gives insight into how long additional negations continued to be used in various genres, and to see specifically how much overlap there was between the use of pas compared to the competing structures. The third source of data is an Ngram Viewer used to track negation frequencies over time. Through the dictionary analysis, corpus data, and Ngram graphs, I confirm the general timeframe found in most current literature, but also identify a trend with the post-verbal mie and its use as a literary device to reflect archaism.

This dissertation is concerned with synchronic variation as the reflection and residue of language change. It springs from the need to account for the numerous ways of expressing negation in contemporary Grassfield Bantu, given the observation that many languages across the continents make use of a single marker for the same purpose. The leading research question is whether there exists a roadmap susceptible to lead from one of the extremes to the other. The answer to this question establishes a connection between synchronic variation and diachrony.0Using cross-generational variation within Grassfield Bantu, macro-variation data from languages with historical records, and micro-variation data from closely related Bamileke languages, it is argued that grammar internal variation of the kind observed in Grassfield Bantuis the manifestation of language change. This approach constitutes an inspiration for the analysis of languages that don’t have written records from previous generations.

The grammaticalized expression of negation is a linguistic universal. This volume deals with negation in the Uralic language family in a typological perspective. As in no other major language family before, a comprehensive typological questionnaire provides the basis for the chapters documenting negation in 17 languages. Most of them are endangered. The chapters highlight negative auxiliary verbs—the special Uralic feature—and their ways of combining with the rich inventory of other negators in different types of clauses, as well as negative replies, negative indefinites, abessives/caritives/privatives, scope, polarity and emphatic negation.
