In Plato's Apology, Socrates says he spent his life examining and questioning people on how best to live, while avowing that he himself knows nothing important. Elsewhere, however, for example in Plato's Republic, Plato's Socrates presents radical and grandiose theses. In this book Sandra Peterson offers a hypothesis which explains the puzzle of Socrates' two contrasting manners. She argues that the apparently confident doctrinal Socrates is in fact conducting the first step of an examination: by eliciting his interlocutors' reactions, his apparently doctrinal lectures reveal what his interlocutors believe is the best way to live. She tests her hypothesis by close reading of passages in the Theaetetus, Republic and Phaedo. For these dialogues the author "proposes a strategy of interpretation that insists on the dialogues' essentially interrogatory character. . . . Stokes argues that we are not entitled to ascribea thesis to Socrates (far less to Plato) unless he unambiguously asserts it as his own belief. . . . For the most part, Stokes argues, Socrates is doing what he claims to be doing: cross-examining his interlocutor. He draws the materials of his own argument from the respondent's explicit admissions and from his own knowledge of the respondent's character, commitments and ways of life.What is shown by such a procedure is not, . . . It is a longstanding puzzle why Socrates acts so differently in different dialogues. This book examines the Socratic method of elenchus, or refutation. Refutation by its very nature is a conflict, which in the hands of Plato becomes high drama. The continuing conversation in which it occurs is more a test of character than of intellect. Dialogue and Discovery shows that, in his conversations, Socrates seeks to define moral qualities—moral essences—with the goal of improving the soul of the respondent. Ethics underlies epistemology because the discovery of philosophic truth imposes moral demands on the respondent. The recognition that moral qualities such as honesty, humility, and courage are necessary to successful inquiry is the key to the understanding of the Socratic paradox that virtue is knowledge. The dialogues receiving the most emphasis are the Apology, Gorgias, Protagoras, and Meno.

Excerpt from The Four Socratic Dialogues of Plato The Eutbypbra, which comes first in order, exhibits Socrates to us as a teacher, who seeks by his dialectical an to awake men out of their confidence in their own untested Opinions, and to stimulate them to inquire what they mean by their confident judgements on all ethical subjects. The search for a definition of piety leads to an exposure of the unsoundness of the basis of ethics provided by Polytheism, and it is discovered that thatalone can be regarded as a pious act with which all the gods are pleased. This, again, raises the question, whether an act is pious because the gods are pleased with it, or the gods are pleased with it because it is pious. If the latter, then piety must be defined as a part of justice or righteousness: but justice or righteousness is generally regarded as concerned only with our duties to men. We are therefore involved in a critical discussion of the question, whether the service of God imposes special duties, distinct from those involved in the service of man. The dialogue ends with the apparently negative conclusion that, if we exclude the absurd idea that men can help the gods, piety can only consist in doing what is pleasing to them - the very definition which has al ready been rejected as unsatisfactory. But the attentive reader will recognize that the discussion has brought us to a point of view from which piety is seen to be not a special department of morality, but only the religious aspect of it.
