After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, millions of Romanians emigrated in search of work and new experiences; they became engaged in an interrogation of what it meant to be Romanian in a united Europe and the globalized world. Their thoughts, feelings and hopes soon began to populate the virtual world of digital and mobile technologies. This book chronicles the online cultural and political expressions of the Romanian diaspora using websites based in Europe and North America. Through online exchanges, Romanians perform new types of citizenship, articulated from the margins of the political field. The politicization of their diasporic condition is manifested through written and public protests against discriminatory work legislation, mobilization, lobbying, cultural promotion and setting up associations and political parties that are proof of the gradual institutionalization of informal communications. Online discourse analysis, supplemented by interviews with migrants, poets and politicians involved in the process of defining new diasporic identities, provide the basis of this book, which defines the new cultural and political practices of the Romanian diaspora.

Sometimes the Diaspora Begins at Home F. Ev’one yaY a.k.a. Felton Perry This manuscript addresses the participation of some continental Africans, i.e., indigenous members of various linguistic, religious, and cultural communities who aided and abetted the European slave traders during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (TAST). They committed innumerable acts of kidnapping on their neighbors with whom they coinhabited the African continent’s sub-Saharan regions: Western, Central, and to a lesser extent, Eastern. There exist in some current societies the memory of ancestral involvement in past enslaving activities for which they have created ceremonies and graven images to atone for their forbearers’ predatory practices. Many of the abducted unfortunates, besides being incorporated into the TATS, were sold into other slavery systems as well. The Trans-Saharan, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the ubiquitous African internal networks for which there is very little verifiable documentation translated into English. This lack of written records reflecting the number of humans absorbed into these systems means that there will never be an accurate total of all who were ensnared; however, the European slave-ship captains maintained fairly good ship logs of their slave purchases for the duration of the TAST era. While deficient in some aspects, they nevertheless provide a general accounting of the human trafficking business from the mid-fifteenth century of the dawning of the twentieth century.

Few questions have agitated thoughtful Jews as much as the one touching on identity. The problem arose originally from the situation of the Jews as a diaspora community. From the time of Philo and probably before, great energies have been expended by Jews in seeking to understand the meaning of the Jewish dispersion. In recent times the problem has been transformed from a largely academic and relig ious issue into a political one, to wit the furious debates in modern Israel over the citizenship quandary. For more than twenty years now the Jewish State has been rocked by violent and often acrimonious discussion over the who is a Jew controversy. The consequences of these exchanges have had reverberations all over the Jewish world since a final determination of this issue could not but have important bearing on present-day diaspora communities. The Hadramis of South Yemen and the emergence of their diasporic communities throughout the Indian Ocean region are an intriguing facet of the history of this region’s migratory patterns. In the early centuries of migration, the Yemeni, or Hadrami, traveler was both a trader and a religious missionary, making the migrant community both a “trade diaspora” and a “religious diaspora.” This tradition has continued as Hadramis around the world have been linked to networks of extremist, Islamic-inspired movements—Osama bin Laden, leader of Al Qaeda and descendant of a prominent Hadrami family, as the most infamous example. However, communities of Hadramis living outside Yemen are not homogenous. The author expertly elucidates the complexity of the diasporic process, showing how it contrasts with the conventional understanding of the Hadrami diaspora as an unchanging society with predefined cultural characteristics originating in the homeland. Exploring ethnic, social, and religious aspects, the author offers a deepened understanding of links between Yemen and Indian Ocean regions (including India, Southeast Asia, and the Horn of Africa) and the emerging international community of Muslims.
