Inspired by the discovery that many leading environmentalists now believe we've passed the point of no return, Roberta Park set out to write her own account of our fears and responsibilities at this extraordinary point in human history. But instead of taking the usual nonfiction route, she chose to examine our deep moral quandary in an enigmatic three-part novella. The Disappearing Shore imagines what might happen if the nice environmentalist next door finally snapped and started telling the truth-the real truth about his overwhelming guilt, rage, and fear. From there it gives a voice to others who join him in a desperate bid to save their corner of the world, while providing an account of our recklessness for those destined to pick up the pieces. From the confessions of today's unlikely heroes-full of candour and dark humour-The Disappearing Shore depicts a much different tomorrow, and the struggle of those determined to continue the human story, with help from mysterious gifts of the past. A cautionary tale that shatters the denial that blinds us to reality, Park weaves her narrative with wry humour, honesty and hope.

Winner of the 2018 Louisiana Literary Award given by the Louisiana Library Association For centuries, outlanders have openly denigrated Louisiana's coastal wetlands residents and their stubborn refusal to abandon the region's fragile prairies tremblants despite repeated natural and, more recently, man-made disasters. Yet, the cumulative environmental knowledge these wetlands survivors have gained through painful experiences over the course of two centuries holds invaluable keys to the successful adaptation of modern coastal communities throughout the globe. As Hurricane Sandy recently demonstrated, coastal peoples everywhere face rising sea levels, disastrous coastal erosion, and, inevitably, difficult lifestyle choices. Along the Bayou State's coast the most insidious challenges are man-made. Since channelization of the Mississippi River in the wake of the 1927 flood, which diverted sediments and nutrients from the wetlands, coastal Louisiana has lost to erosion, subsidence, and rising sea levels a land mass roughly twice the size of Connecticut. State and national policymakers were unable to reverse this environmental catastrophe until Hurricane Katrina focused a harsh spotlight on the human consequences of eight decades of neglect. Yet, even today, the welfare of Louisiana's coastal plain residents remains, at best, an afterthought in state and national policy discussions. For coastal families, the Gulf water lapping at the doorstep makes this morass by no means a scholarly debate over abstract problems. Ain't There No More renders an easily read history filled with new insights and possibilities. Rare, previously unpublished images documenting a disappearing way of life accompany the narrative. The authors bring nearly a century of combined experience to distilling research and telling this story in a way invaluable to Louisianans, to policymakers, and to all those concerned with rising sea levels and seeking a long-term solution.

It's time to stop hiding who you really are... Children love to play hide and seek. It's the one childhood game we all remember playing. But think for a moment about how we, as adults, often continue this game throughout our lives. A fear of self-disclosure and genuine intimacy causes us to mask our true selves and project an image that either we are comfortable with, or we believe others want to see. Adam and Eve were the original "hide and seek" team. Suddenly confronted with their own vulnerability and shame through their own self-deception, they attempted to disappear, disguising themselves with their own makeover from the Garden. But God came looking for them, seeking to restore not only their relationship with Him, but their true sense of identity. In the same way, God desires to skill each of us in the art of not disappearing. He longs for us to understand both who He is and what we mean to Him - and to know that there is no longer a need to hide. Drawing on biblical insights and his own challenging testimony of transformation, Van Shore calls the reader to allow God to shape you into the loved, accepted person He always intended you to be as He helps you live the way He wants. ABOUT THE AUTHOR VAN SHORE is a Senior Lecturer at Brisbane Alphacrucis College in Australia and previously worked with Hillsong Brisbane. He is married to Heazle and is the author of two books.

Beautifully written, thought-provoking, intense and cleverly wrought, this is the most extraordinary first novel from a mesmerising new talent. One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the north-eastern edge of Russia, two sisters are abducted. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. Set on the remote Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth draws us into the world of an astonishing cast of characters, all connected by an unfathomable crime. We are transported to vistas of rugged beauty – densely wooded forests, open expanses of tundra, soaring volcanoes and the glassy seas that border Japan and Alaska – and into a region as complex as it is alluring, where social and ethnic tensions have long simmered, and where outsiders are often the first to be accused. In a story as propulsive as it is emotionally engaging, and through a young writer's virtuosic feat of empathy and imagination, this powerful novel provides a new understanding of the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before. Praise for Disappearing Earth "A genuine masterpiece, but one that is easily consumed in a feverish stay-up-all-night bout of reading pleasure." Gary Shteyngart “Suspenseful, original and compelling, Disappearing Earth is a strange and haunting voyage into a strange and haunting world.' Simon Sebag-Montefiore, author of The Romanovs “Julia Phillips is at once a careful cartographer and gorgeous storyteller... . A mystery of two missing girls burns at the center of this astonishing debut, and the complexity of ethnicity, gender, hearth and kin illuminates this question and many more.” Tayari Jones, author of An American Marriage 'A knock-out... .The stitches of Phillips’s language make you go, Damn, that’s good.' The Los Angeles Review of Books 'A superb debut.' New York Times

Current climatic and environmental trends mean that a large number of important coastal destinations across the globe are under threat of change or gradual disappearance. Many of these locations are also significant tourist destinations, such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Everglades National Park or large swathes of the Mediterranean basin. Tourism activity both exacerbates the problem and highlights the importance of protecting these often fragile environments. This book discusses threats to, and consequences of, tourism growth and the impacts of climate change on such coastal zones. It examines policy initiatives, local and national options for managing the potential crisis and recommends steps and management options towards ameliorating projected impacts on coastal tourism infrastructure. This is an important book for researchers and students of leisure and tourism, land-use planning, environmental and coastal management and all those interested in and working with the environment, conservation and sustainability.
