Excerpt from Lectures and Discourses There is, I think, a unity of thought and design in the Lectures and Dis courses herewith published which the titles they severally bear might fail to make plain. The causes which render men irreligious or indifferent to religion are in general not rational or intellectual, and are never wholly so; and this is the thought which has guided me in the lecture on Religious Indifference. In the discourse which follows I have made a brief survey of the controversy between Religion and Science, in which the causes of unbelief are considered from a more exclusively intellectual point of view. The lecture on God and Christ is preliminary and introductory to the statement and enforcement of Catholic Truth, which is the subject-matter of the discourses that follow. Excerpt from Discourses The contents of the following volume divide themselves into two sections of unequal size. The first, and the smallest of these, consisting of the three first papers, is from the pen of the Author; the last contains mere reports of lectures delivered by him. All have been in print before, but he first gathered them together and put them in an accessible form to the public a year or two ago, When the present volume was printed; and it is believed that to almost all but his immediate friends its contents are entirely new. Whether he would have expended health and leisure, had he possessed them, in recasting addresses Which in their actual form must retain something of the unsuitableness of any utterance designed for the eat, but meeting the eye, can never be decided now; what is certain is, that he had not the opportunity of doing so. The duties of a college course, and the frequent interruptions of bad health, delayed the. Publication of the work for several years, deferring even the few words of preface which he hoped to write, of which his death, on the 12th of January, 1866, has deprived us for ever. Excerpt from Twelve Discourses Thus clearly comprehending the point to be proved, let us glance a moment at the nature Of the argument On which it will be natural and necessary for us to de pend in its demonstration. We must rely, in the first place, upon the five senses to put us in possession of the facts upon which our proposition will rest. We must rely, in the second place, upon testimony to en large our own personal cognizance Of such facts, by the added experience Of others. We must rely, in the third place, upon common sense to supply such princi ples as may be necessary to link those facts together. And, in the last place, we must rely upon reasoning to frame those facts and principles into a bridge Of argu ment, which will carry us securely and strongly over from the known result t0 the unknown cause. The two main principles, from the domain Of common sense, on which it is needful to rely, in such an argu ment, are, that every effect must have a cause, and that every cause implies the presence of mind. SO vital are these to the result, that I shall pause a moment to develop more fully their nature and reliability, before proceeding further.
