This is pretty well reported for Mr. Leader: though I may correct the last sentence attributed to me by him, and this I can do by tym Manchester papers. The Courier, Oct. 11, said, " He (Mr. Grant) stated that the alteration in the Book had been made to cover the tyranny-which he (had) exposed." The Manchester Guardian of the same date reported me as saying, "Why had the words ' omitted from' been put in this year that were never in before, and would not have been in now but for the tyranny of the committee, which he (Mr. Grant) had endeavoured to expose." Dr. Smith, the secretary, instead of confessing the gross injustice committed, and the fraud and usurpation of inventing a law to 6creen it, was hysterically affected at the dreadful taste of using the word " tyranny." After I had finished my studies at the college, I went to seek my fortune in the dissenting world, for at that time dissenterism was all the world to me, ?I knew not of, and cared not for, any other world; the national religion and its temples were to me exactly on a par with the mythology of Greece and Rome, and the temples in which wood and stone were wont to be worshipped. I do not know anything which can come up to the conceit of an imperfectly educated and simple young man. I was full of vanity and self-sufficiency; I felt myself to be an oracle, and fancied that I should astonish and illuminate the world. Perhaps, however, conceit is common to the young of all classes, educatedor not educated. Thirty years ago, I should not have thought it necessary, as I do now, to explain to my readers the manner in which ministers gain possession of their pulpits in dissenting congregations: but I find that our internal polity is not so well known to all the world as I then imagined. There are many classes of dissenters, but to which particular body I belong I do not wish to make known, for the matters on which I shall treat are nearly common to them all. It is a matter of boasting among the dissenters, that they are not compelled to receive their ministers from the appointment of others, but that they choose for themselves. That they certainly do, and so much the worse for them and their pastors, as will perhaps frequently appear in the course of this history. There are varieties in the mode of election, for in some chapels the right of choosing the minister rests in the trustees, in others the choice rests in the whole body of the subscribers, and in others the minister is chosen by the church only.
