Excerpt from The Doctrine of Infant Baptism as Taught in the Scriptures and Practised in the Church To rightly understand the mystery of the Circumcision to which our infant Saviour submitted, it is necessary to state to you its origin and its epoch. The first mention of it is in the seventeenth chapter of Genesis, when God revealed it to Abra ham, and recorded it for us And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee, in their generations, for an. Avanmsrrno covenant to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. As a token and seal of the covenant, God gave him this sacred rite, and commanded that on the eighth day, every male child should be circumcised; and the neglect of this outward sign was declared to he a violation of the covenant anu a forfeiture of its blessings. And the uncircum cised man. Child, whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from the people; he hath broken my covenant.1' So we learn that the origin of Circumcision w as the sovereign will of god, and its etfect was to bring the chosen people into covenant with Him. As such it was observed by all who valued their election, and exercised their faith in the promises of God - as such it was sanctioned and received, \hen the eight days were accomplished for the circnntcising of the child, and they called II: name jesi's - as such it must still be considered by us for although the sign is changed, the sigui fication remains - although we no longer circumcise our children, our children enter into covenant with God. St. Paul, discours ing upon the subject, calls the sign of circumcision the seal of the righteousness which is by jitith and he points out, with wonderful precision, its nature as a sacrament it was an entrance into covenant with God, an outward and visible sign of an inw ard and spiritual grace given to them; it w as not merely a mark to distinguish them from the heathen - it was the mystical cutting ofi'of sin - the mystical adoption into the family of God. The Lord, thy God will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, that thou mayest So we see, it was not a more ceremony, once to he performed and then to be forever forgotten - it was to remove sin - it was to sanctify the heart - to fill it with divine love and prepare it for eternal life. Excerpt from Infant Baptism: Its Nature and Objects The questions regarding the mode and subjects of Baptism, though the more ordinary and prominent, are not the only ones which the discussion of this topic involves. Even after these are settled, there remains the not less important inquiry, What is the use or meaning of Baptism, especially of Infant Baptism? What good purpose does it serve? What spiritual benefit does it confer? This inquiry may be regarded as raised by a controversialist, or as proceeding from a humble, anxious believer. In either case, it deserves to be entertained, and plainly needs to be satisfied - on the one hand, in order to obviate an objection which is often and not unsuccessfully urged; on the other hand, in order to promote an intelligent observance and comfortable improvement of the ordinance. This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Paul Jewett, author of the creative and highly provocative book Man As Male and Female, here turns his critical attention to the practice of infant baptism. Jewett does not accept the traditional "covenant" argument for baptizing infants, and this book explains why he believes this argument fails. Infant baptism is not a subject which can be isolated. For, as Jewett would have his readers understand, one's view on this issue is integrally related to one's view of the sacraments in general and thereby to the whole doctrine of the church and salvation. Thus it is understandable that what appears to be a minor theological question has had such divisive effects on the church. A discussion of the historical source of infant baptism begins Jewett's critique and introduces such issues as the distinction between infants and children, the silence of certain early church fathers on the subject, infant communion, and catechetical instruction. The second and major portion of this book examines the theological issue, focusing specifically on the covenant argument, which suggests that baptism replaces circumcision as the sign of the covenant and thereby is given to infants. This argument, Jewett claims, fails to take into account the historical character of revelation, and contains certain contradictions. Jewett concludes with a creative defense of believer baptism, one which is theologically responsible and which recognizes the profound truths of covenant theology.
