Excerpt from Of the Doctrine of Morality in Its Relation to the Grace of Redemption The following lectures have been read to classes in Moral Philosophy. They were intended to show the relation of a system of morality, such as moral science deduces from the nature of man, to the redemption by the Son of God, and to the grace which comes from that redemption. We seem to be somewhat disturbed by the Buddhist and other systems of morality, as if they demanded concessions which were not loyal to Christianity. On the contrary, it is attempted to be shown that this morality is what we should expect from the nature of man. The Church is the minister of grace. Buddhist and all other natural morality requires the ministration of the Church, the light and the grace which the Saviour of the world sends through her, in order that that moral life may be developed, and that it may characterize man in all his daily relations. Excerpt from The Concept of Morals In morals finally we have the doctrine of ethical rela tivity.' It IS the same story over again. Morality ls doubtless human. It has not descended upon us out of the sky. It has grown out of human nature, and is relative to that nature. Nor could it have, apart from that nature, any meaning whatever. This we must, accept. But if this is interpreted to mean that whatever any social group thinks good is good (for that group), that there is no common standard, and that consequently any one moral code is as good as any other, then this relativism in effect denies the difference between good and evil altogether, and makes meaningless the idea of progress in moral con ceptions. Ethics Without Intention written by Ezio Di Nucci and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-23 with Philosophy categories.

Ethics Without Intention tackles the questions raised by difficult moral dilemmas by providing a critical analysis of double effect and its most common ethical and political applications. The book discusses the philosophical distinction between intended harm and foreseen but unintended harm. This distinction, which, according to the doctrine of double effect, makes a difference to the moral justification of actions, is widely applied to some of the most controversial ethical and political questions of our time: collateral damages in wars and acts of terrorism; palliative care, euthanasia, abortion, and embryo research; self-defence, suicide, and self-sacrifice. It is also crucial to the now notorious theoretical cases of the trolley problem and the knobe effect. Di Nucci approaches the doctrine of double effect from four key directions: its historical origins, which can be traced further back than the classic attribution to Aquinas; its theoretical coherence, which is the subject of a lively contemporary debate in philosophy; its moral intuitiveness, which has always been taken for granted but has recently begun to be questioned; and finally its relevance to the difficult moral and political decisions of our time. An engaging and comprehensive introduction to the doctrine of double effect.
